Mr. Right (2015): An Underrated Action Rom-Com

You never know who you are dating.

"Mr. Right" is a 2015 film. Martha wants to find a “perfect guy.” When she meets Francis (or Mr. Right), she is hopelessly in love. There’s one catch: he’s a hitman. That doesn’t change anything for Martha, who discovers she loves the life of crime.

I love this movie. I wish I had found it sooner, and there was a remote to erase the mind so I could watch it for the first time again. It made me laugh and laugh. "Mr. Right" is an unapologetic comedy that we don’t see enough of.

The film pairs Anna Kendrick and Sam Rockwell. They were so fun to watch in all their scenes. Their chemistry carries the entire film, balancing sweet interactions and manic humor. Their interactions felt so natural, and I would love to see them in more movies.

Kendrick plays her usual character, where she’s uninterested in dating, and finds something else that excites her. Martha becomes crazed in the hitman's life. That’s what Kendrick said she liked most when she read the script. Kendrick was hilarious in playing up the character’s growing enthusiasm.

Sam Rockwell is awesome! I have compiled a list of every film Rockwell has been in. He can play any character in both comedies and dramas. His dry humor and charm are contagious, and he always finds different ways to play characters. Mr. Right is not perfect, killing people left and right. Rockwell even adds his trademark dancing feet to the film.

The late James Ransone plays the lead villain, Von Cartigan. I have missed him so much. I was so sad when I heard of his passing. Although he suffered from demons, Ransone was a natural talent and so funny onscreen.

The villains are having their own comedy show, fighting about their problems. Credits include Tim Roth, Anson Mount, Michael Eklund, RZA, Jaiden Kaine, and more.

One character whom I liked was Sophie, played by Katie Nehra, who hasn’t starred in a film in over a decade. Sophie is supposed to be a minor character, but Nehra adds so much more to the role. No matter how small your part is, make it memorable.

This is the type of comedy you can get away with that’s sick or awful, but makes it funnier. You have the bad guys fighting with each other, and Martha is glowing the more she finds a liking for killing people.

Max Landis wrote the script, mixing romance with action-movie tropes. It’s a familiar plot, but refreshing.

Director Paco Cabezas deserves a great deal of credit for making "Mr. Right" work. If you don’t know Cabazes, he has directed episodes of Netflix’s "Wednesday" and "The Umbrella Academy." Cabezos approaches the material with a sense of style that keeps the film lively. The action scenes are fast, colorful, and intentionally exaggerated.

Filming took place in New Orleans, which gave the movie a vibrant backdrop. Certain scenes were filmed at the Luling Mansion and the Cabrini Bridge. By the third act, characters are in fights, on the run, and in gunfights.

Some reviewers have complained that the film has too many subplots, and it’s three movies in one. The multiple storylines add more to it. There’s never just one story happening in a film. Several perspectives add meat to the story. Besides, every action story should be different.

"Mr. Right" is an underrated movie, which is why you should add it to your list. It is violent and has gunfights, but it’s as funny as ever.
