Merchandise For ‘Multiverse Of Madness’ Gives Us A Better Look At This Classic Villain

Marvel Merchandise Does It Again

The trailer for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness dropped a couple of weeks ago after appearing as the post-credits scene in Spider-Man: No Way Home. With it came dozens of theories and speculation. One of the more debated things in the trailer is the identity of a tentacled monster Strange is fighting towards the end of the trailer. Many fans speculated that this would be Shuma-Gorath while others said Gargantos. The mystery has been finally revealed thanks to LEGO, of all people. It may also hint at even bigger things to come for the MCU.

A LEGO set for the Doctor Strange sequel has officially confirmed that the one-eyed tentacle monster in the trailer is Gargantos. This is certainly not the first time that LEGO has revealed something about a future Marvel project. Years ago, a LEGO set revealed that Ant-Man would become gigantic in Captain America: Civil War. However, the LEGO set is not the only merchandise that features Gargantos. Other merchandise features Gargantos prominently in their artwork. Most of the artwork has him front and center. One even features him with the main cast of the film like Doctor Strange, Scarlet Witch, Wong, and America Chavez. This could possibly suggest that he will play a much larger role in the film than the trailer may lead on.

Another peculiar thing about the character is that Gargantos looks more like Suma-Gorath in the trailer and the artwork. It is possible that Marvel could be trying to combine the two characters similar to how they have done certain characters in the past. They could be giving Gargantos Shuma-Gorath's design and abilities. Shuma-Gorath is also a creature capable of altering reality and multidimensional travel, among other things, which would make him a more appropriate adversary for the Doctor Strange sequel rather than Gargantos. Furthermore, there is a creature in the What If…? series that many fans speculated would be Suma-Gorath. Fans are also theorizing that the evil Doctor Strange from What If…? is the same one seen in the Multiverse of Madness trailer. If they are the same character, it would make sense for Shuma-Gorath to return, but that sadly does not seem to be the case.

The character being Gargantos opens some interesting possibilities. Gargantos was originally an adversary to Namor the Submariner. Namor is widely believed to be appearing in the sequel to Black Panther, and he was alluded to in Avengers: Endgame. Gargantos appearing in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness could be the first introduction of Namor into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He could appear in the final film or he could be in a post-credit scene setting up Black Panther 2. Either way, it is exciting to think that Namor is getting closer and closer to appearing in the MCU.

Naturally, most of this is speculation. The only confirmed piece of information is that the tentacled creature in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is, in fact, Gargantos. Just because he is not Shuma-Gorath does not mean he is not a threat though. Gargantos throws a bus at Strange in the trailer. If he has even a fraction of Shuma-Gorath’s power, he could become a real threat for Strange and the others. Of course, Strange will have help from the new Sorcerer Supreme, Wong, and Scarlet Witch. The trailer also shows America Chavez (Miss America) played by Xochitl Gomez. Her multidimensional powers should come in handy for the threats from all over the multiverse. Unfortunately, due to delay, fans will have to wait a little longer to see what all those threats are and how Strange, Wong, Wanda, and America Chavez will handle them.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness premieres on May 6, 2022.
