Magic Types: Blood Magic
What is Blood Magic, generally speaking?
Ah, Blood Magic. I have a love/hate relationship with this magic type. I think I was first introduced to it, like many of you, in the game “Dragon Age Origins”.
Blood Magic was tightly woven into the world of Dragon Age so, of course, I wanted a taste of that forbidden power.
But, not only was the choice to get it cruel but when I did do it in my 3rd play-through, it was not as great as people told me.
Maybe It was me but it always felt clunky and not worth the risk. Despite that, I still love the idea of Blood Magic and the world-building potential it has.
So today I want to talk all about this infamous magic type.
Effects of Blood Magic
Blood Magic is pretty simple, it’s the ability to control blood.
It may be simple but that does not mean it’s weak, the ability to manipulate blood gives the mage control over all living things. Only those that have:
• Blood Magic
• Immense strength
• No Blood
Can Resist it.
You can also control your own body which I learned from the manga “The Villainess Will Crush Her Destruction End Through Modern Firearm”.
With this ability you can:
• Reverse blood-flow which can cause instant death
• Explode blood cells which can cause instant death
• Control someone’s body and mind
• Control your own blood-flow to increase your strength like enchantment magic.
• Make blood constructs (Weapons, tornadoes, wings, and armor)
That’s not even all this magic type can do!
As mentioned before, you can find Blood Magic in the game “Dragon Age Origins” and in that game, Blood is a magic booster and can summon demons.
It’s like a reserve tank of mana for your spells and a way to be a summoner without actually being one.
Dangerous and not advised but still cool to know.
Finally, I wanted to point out that if a Blood Mage ever met the Xenomorph they could control its blood to become an Acid Mage too. Just think of it, Acid Blood Rain, Tornadoes, Swords!
Blood Magic’s role in World-building
As you can see, Blood Magic is usually very powerful and dangerous. This should reflect in the world-building and magic system.
Unless the world you’re building is like “The Villainess”, Blood Magic should have a noticeable impact.
Blood Magic is usually too powerful to not have an impact. Even if it’s rare, normal people would look upon the mage as a danger to everyone.
Unlike Necromancy, which has a good side, Blood Magic would almost always come from people who want to increase their power or control others.
Besides strength enchantment, the only way I see common folk using this magic is if they want to cure some illnesses.
Other than that, the antagonist and outcast groups would use Blood Magic.
It would most likely be a forbidden art and if used by the heroes, they would be seen as dangerous. They might even have to fight the urge to use this magic for evil.
This is not even mentioning the demon summoning part. Summoning demons is usually seen as worse than summoning the dead. This though is more unique to Dragon Age’s Blood Magic so it’s not the norm.
There are still some ways to write around this by limiting the power of Blood Magic or writing a story that explores its small good side.
Some questions to ask yourself when adding Blood Magic to your story:
• How powerful is it? What parts of the full power-set will you include?
• Is it Rare or common? What kind of effect would this have on the world?
• What are the costs for using it?
• Does your Blood Magic have any unique sides to it like Dragon Age?
• Is Blood Magic connected to any other Magic Type?
