Love Again - A Movie Review

Love never follows the rules. That’s why you do crazy things.

Love Again is a 2023 film—Texting romantic messages to her deceased boyfriend’s old phone, Mira attempts to ease the grief. Inadvertently receiving the texts, Rob gets in contact with Mira. The two brandish romantic chemistry and fill missing holes in one another's lives.

I had the biggest smile while exiting the theater after watching Love Again. Love Again is a charming and warm rom-com. I had this movie all wrong from my initial thoughts. Distinct from the typical love story, Love Again is a tender film about two people rediscovering their spark for life again.

Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Sam Heughan had remarkable chemistry. Jonas and Heughan were fantastic, bringing depth and vulnerability to the characters. They did great in all their interactions, especially when they had ‘Would You Rather’ competitions. Both feeling lost, Mira and Rob meet at the right time.

Love Again establishes a theme that isn’t enforced enough in romance films. Love is not just about finding a connection with someone else. Aside from being happy with their connection, the newfound relationship aids them in seeking new career goals and characterizing a more positive reflection about themselves.

Love Again has the best-supporting cast I have seen in a rom-com. Supporting roles are the most important of any movie. Fitting all the generic rom-com roles, the ensemble was excellent in creating characters and in their interactions.

Suzy (Sophie Barcley) was a helpful sister to Mira. Russell Tovey was a riot as Billy. He put a new spin on the cliche gay best friend. His most memorable scene was when he was sending a flirty gaze toward another man in a restaurant. Lydia West was also funny as Rob’s other co-worker.

In a hilarious casting choice, Nick Jonas (Priyanka Chopra’s Jonas’s real-life husband) has a small role as Mira’s bigheaded date who gives her an embarrassingly slobbery kiss. The scene in the back of the cab was hilarious.

The film’s highlight is Celine Dion as herself (in a remarkable acting debut!) Snarky, confident, and your fairy godmother of the story, Dion is unforgettable. In her interviews with Rob, she shares helpful advice and tells a moving story about the loss of her husband. Including Dion’s love playlist in the film, you may hum the tunes right when you exit the theater. Now I want to get a singing phone call from Dion.

The setting for Love Again takes place in New York City. The streets are busy as cars and people hustle about. The nightlife devotes the film’s prettiest scenes as the characters strolled beneath gorgeous street lighting or had meals at the best restaurants. I would like to devour a hamburger from the burger tavern now.

Love Again was filmed in 2020 at the height of the pandemic. Jim Strauss did a commendable job in his direction, avoiding any means necessary at making Love Again a forgettable and bland romantic story. Though it follows the usual romantic cliches, Love Again retains a humorous style.

This story breathes life for anyone who is undergoing a difficult time. Nobody is ever alone. With the proper support, we will find ourselves again. That’s the most relatable theme. Take chances at love and your career, and challenge yourself to be a better person.

It’s nice to know when my predictions about a movie are wrong. This movie made me so happy that I felt like dancing out of the theater it made me so giddy. I don’t understand why Love Again doesn’t have more hype. Avoid the negative reviews and see Love Again.
