Late Night - A Movie Review

'Late Night' reads true to the protocols of comedy shows or talk shows.

Don’t you think we should upgrade our show? Times are changing.

Late Night is a 2019 Amazon Prime film. A late-night TV hostess notices that her ratings are not like other networks. Katherine Newbury is not the most open-minded person, so she hires an intern. Molly may change the game for Katherine’s TV network.

Late Night reads true to the protocols of comedy shows or talk shows. It’s necessary to change routines to keep up with today’s values. Late Night is a film that all comedy grids should watch. Change is a risk, but it's for the better.

Emma Thompson is a spectacular actress. Katherine Newbury is not the most pleasant person to work with, jabbing people with unkind remarks and putting people off with the cold shoulder. Reluctantly, she listens to new ideas to get herself to the top again. Thompson was fantastic in the role, adding her own comedic chops.

It’s tough trying to stick your foot in the door in the career world. That’s what I like about Molly. Always staying a step ahead to make her ideas known, Molly is an excellent leader for anyone. Mindy Kaling was fantastic in the role. I could tell she used some of her own experiences to connect with the part.

This film is all about Thompson and Kaling’s interactions. They did well in all of their scenes. Katherine was mean to Molly, trying to put her down. Except, Molly doesn’t let her boss’s hurtful words ruin her. They make a great team, proving to be strong women. It’s the best example of women that we need in media like this.

The ensemble of actors playing the team of writers or other night show workers did well together. Paul Walter Hauser is one of them. He is a great character actor. More credits include Amy Ryan, Denis O’Hare, John Early, Hugh Dancy, Annaleigh Ashford, and a few notable stars playing themselves.

One character who either should have been eliminated or given a completely different story is Walter (John Lithgow). As Katherine’s husband, he is not in the story as much. Walter has Parkinson’s Disease, resulting in a handicap.

His handicap could have played more into the film. While they have a loving relationship, Katherine’s storyline attains all the attention, pushing Walter to the sidelines.

Late Night came out at the right time. Nisha Ganata examined how we should make efforts to change our routines. The world of TV is changing every day. Keep up with the latest trends. That’s a crucial lesson to anyone on the Internet or in the media trying to get ahead.

Late Night is a blend of comedy and drama. The story overdid itself with noticeable cliches. Most of the jokes are repetitive. I italicized ‘jokes’ if you want to call them that. Are insults jokes? Maybe to a particular audience, but we should watch what we say.

Since Katherine spends most of the film insulting her co-workers in whatever way she can, that’s what Late Night fuels on. It got tiring after a while.

That criticism aside, Late Night is sincere. Propelling the right message forward, we don’t get too many films like Late Night. The film is a lesson on the TV world. In this behind-the-scenes look at the TV world, viewers learn a lot about the process of talk shows. Having its slow moments, Late Night is straightforward in what it’s distributing.

Take a look at Late Night on Amazon Prime. I enjoyed it. Funny and heartfelt, the film is not a bad watch. The message was influential.
