After months of speculations and rumors of marital problems, Kim Kardashian West filed for divorce from rapper husband Kanye West after almost seven years. In January 2021, CNN reported that Kim and Kanye were discussing divorce. A representative for Kim confirmed the news from TMZ that Kim Kardashian West filed for a divorce from Kanye West on Friday, February 19, 2021.

About the Divorce

According to the filing, the divorce will be as amicable as it can be. Neither party is contesting their prenuptial agreement. Kim's net worth is about $780 million while Kanye's net worth is around $1.3 billion.

The couple has agreed to joint legal and physical custody of their four children. Both Kim and Kanye are committed to co-parenting together their two daughters, North and Chicago; and two sons, Saint and Psalm.

Many sources indicated in January that Kim and Kanye's divorce was about to happen after the 40-year old media personality hired the renowned divorce attorney Laura Wasser. Another indication was that Kanye was not with his family over the Christmas holidays. He was at his Wyoming ranch instead of joining his wife, children, and the Kardashian family for their annual holiday celebrations. Even though the news of their divorce has just become official, the couple had been living separately for a few months. The 43-year-old rapper has been spending a lot of time in Wyoming while Kim has been living in Calabasas with the children.

According to Page Six, “Kim got Kanye to go up [to Wyoming] so they could live separate lives and quietly get things sorted out to separate and divorce. The paper added, "She’s done."

Grounds for the Divorce

Page Six says Kim has worked tirelessly to help her husband deal with his mental health struggles. West was hospitalized for exhaustion in 2016, and he was later diagnosed with bipolar disorder.

Last July when Kanye was running for president, he said at a rally in South Carolina that Harriet Tubman never freed any slaves and Kardashian had wanted to abort their first child. He also tweeted some erratic things. Kim came to his defense by making a statement about her husband's struggle. She said, “Anyone who has this or has a loved one in their life who does, knows how incredibly complicated and painful it is to understand.” She described Kanye as “brilliant but complicated.” She also solicited the public to have compassion for him because of his mental illness.

Kim is serious about taking the bar exam and becoming a lawyer. She is committed to her prison reform campaign. In the meantime, Kanye is tired of the Kardashians’ lifestyle. Last July, he wrote in a now-deleted tweet that he wanted a divorce.

If any grounds for divorce could be pinpointed, their differences in lifestyle and politics would be at the top of the list even though there are other grounds. More details about the upcoming divorce will be featured in the final season of Keeping Up with the Kardashians. That season is sure to get many views from the public since it will be the Kardashians' last season on TMZ. The reality show made its debut on October 14, 2007. The twentieth and final season is scheduled to premiere on March 18, 2021. The show is likely to get even more views because the public will want more information about the celebrity couple's divorce.

Marriages and Divorces

This will be Kim's third divorce. She was previously married to music producer Damon Thomas for four years from 2000 to 2004, and to basketball player Kris Humphries for only 72 days in August 2011. Their divorce was finalized in 2013.

Kim and Kanye got married in 2014. The divorce will be Kanye's first because Kim has been his only wife.
