Apokolips: once the fiery terror of the Multiverse, now a lifeless husk filled with ghosts and dark secrets. Will the planet formerly ruled by Darkseid help the Justice League...or destroy it?

This was another series that I saw on the shelf and thought okay Chip’s writing it so let’s flip through and see what we see. This is what happens when you follow creators, you end up picking up books you normally wouldn’t and find yourself enjoying it immensely because of the way the book is being done. This story is definitely intriguing and how it’s being told is something to see for yourself as it’s not so easily described but it’s got the power to grasp you in its grip and not let you go. Which is a good thing too since once you start reading this you won’t stop. There is something about the idea of the last Justice League story that should inherently fascinate folks and that this is one version of such an event well it does tend to generate that whole fascination and intrigue about what could cause such a thing to happen. Then again how does an Idea die?

I am very much enjoying the way that this is being told. The story & plot development that we see through how the sequence of events unfold as well as how the reader learns information is presented exceedingly well. The character development that we see through the dialogue, the character interaction and how they act and react to the situations and circumstances which they encounter continues to flesh them out extremely well. The pacing is superb and as it takes us through the pages revealing more and more of the story we find ourselves caught up on the possibilities that are presented.

I like how we see this being structured and how the layers within the story continue to grow, evolve and strengthen. That we see the avenues being explored and new ones emerging, Bruce’s optimism and his dream for examples, and the characterisation we see plus the twists in the story all add depth, dimension and complexity to the story whether they work with or around the main arc. How we see everything working together to create the story’s ebb & flow as well as how it moves the story forward is perfectly achieved.

I do very much like the interiors here. It has a very nice comic book style feel to the work and a bit elevated at that. The linework is clean, crisp and strong and how we see the varying weights and techniques being utilised to create this level & quality of detail work is extremely nice to see. That backgrounds are utilised is nicely done, though we could use more, I like how they enhance the moments as well as work within the composition of the panels to bring out the depth perception, sense of scale and the overall sense of size and scope to the book. The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels show an extremely talented eye for storytelling. The colour work that we see is brilliantly rendered. The various hues and tones within the colours being utilised to create the shading, highlights and shadow work show us a stellar eye for how colour works, that aurora borealis is sensation by the way.

This feels like it is their last case together and that’s because we see so much change in how the characters behave. The League never needed the big three to survive but if they go and the League does die then it’s the death of an idea, a dream and a symbol and that’s where this gets pretty darn deep within the readers mind. Chip engages the reader perfectly with this story, how well it’s written and the strong characterisation all wrapped up in these amazingly dynamic interiors.
