Julie And The Phantoms: Julie's Friends, Ranked
Julie hasn't been able to make music since the death of her mother. But when three ghosts show up in her studio, they form a band, and Julie is even more connected to her mom. Here are all of Julie's friends, ranked.
Netflix subscribers around the world have been kept entertained throughout the pandemic, as the streaming platform hasn't missed a beat in releasing new content. Julie and the Phantoms recently premiered on the streamer to positive reception. The series is created by Kenny Ortega, who directed High School Musical, Hocus Pocus, and Descendants.
Newcomer Madison Reyes stars as sixteen-year-old Julie, a Latina heroine who has a passion and talent for music. Since the death of her mother, however, Julie hasn't been able to bring herself to create or perform. But when three ghosts show up in her music studio, Julie finds herself even more connected to her mom.
Luke, Alex, and Reggie were just hours away from the big break for their band, Sunset Curve, when they died. Meeting Julie allows them to play again, and hopefully fulfill their dreams. They form a band, which quickly gains traction, and Julie continues to receive support from other friends in her life. Here are all of Julie's friends, ranked.
10. Carrie
Julie and Carrie used to be best friends, presumably because their parents were friends, but at some point, things went sour. Carrie has a brief discussion about this with Nick, during which she suggests that she's bitter that Julie suddenly has a band while Carrie has been working hard for the last year on Dirty Candy.
If Carrie's friendship with Julie broke off because of her mother's death, then that makes Carrie a terrible friend. Instead of abandoning her, she should have tried to support Julie the way Flynn did. To make things worse, Carrie constantly taunts Julie and makes it harder for her to sing. In the final scene, Carrie seems to have a shift in attitude, but she's still far from redemption.
9. Nick
Nick is a sweet but not all that fleshed-out character who becomes romantically interested in Julie right after she moves on from her crush on him. He seems to be aware of her prior interest in him, and he continues supporting her regardless.
The relationship is painfully awkward and accurate but doesn't add a whole lot to the story, other than being an obstacle that prevents Julie and Luke from being together.
8. Aunt Victoria
Viewers may not see her very often, but when she's around, Aunt Victoria's presence is not to be trifled with. Julie, Ray, and Carlos joke that she's a loud presence and perhaps a little too stern for their liking, but it's obvious that they love her and that they couldn't have gotten through the last year without her.
As the sister of Julie's mother, she is passionate about helping Julie through her mourning process and making sure all is well in the Molina household. She also assists Ray in disciplining his children, which may be annoying, but is an important part of their development. Still, it's probably better for Ray to parent his own kids.
7. Reggie
Reggie helps Julie get into music just as much as Luke and Alex do, but he doesn't spend quite as much time with Julie as the other two boys do. Most of the time, he's rattling off memorable one-liners or the subject of slapstick humor.
Still, he's incredibly supportive, and when he's the first to pop up at the Orpheum after playing Caleb's club, Julie is overjoyed to the point of tearing up. Reggie is probably the most interested in the Molina family because of his unique relationship with Ray, and his attempts to help Carlos solve the ghost mystery.
6. Carlos
Though Carlos is only a young boy, he sure is assertive. One person he loves standing up for is Julie. He tries to protect her from Ray and Tia's wrath, but he also tries to investigate the case of the haunted music studio.
He keeps Julie laughing, and he supports her music wholeheartedly, which breaks away from the annoying younger sibling stereotype often seen in young adult film and television.
5. Flynn
Flynn is one of the most supportive and patient people in Julie's life. She has stuck by Julie's side through the darkest time in her life and never pressured her to make music - but that doesn't mean she isn't thrilled when Julie finally sings again.
The two have a band called Double Trouble, but Flynn isn't too upset when Julie forms a new band with the phantoms. In fact, Flynn jumps at the opportunity to become Julie's assistant, manager, marketing team, and roadie - all in one.
4. Alex
Alex may be the sensitive one, but his ability to gauge people's emotions makes him a great friend. From the first scene, he knows the right way to talk to Julie and senses when to keep his distance and when to try to approach her.
He even apologizes to her for the other boys' behavior - more than once. Julie can trust Alex to tell her the truth when the other phantoms would rather keep it from her, which sets their friendship apart.
3. Luke
Luke and Julie share undeniable chemistry and one of the strongest bonds in the show. Considering how little they've known each other, their friendship - and budding romance - is all the more special.
By the end of the series, Julie and Luke are able to physically touch, which for ghosts means that their souls are connected. Beyond their physical connection, their dreams and goals are aligned, and they even have a similar creative process and vision. They write most of their new songs together, combining two worlds of music into one. Luke is quick to understand who Julie is, what drives her, and how much talent she really has. On the other hand, Julie wants to help Luke mend his relationship with his parents.
2. Ray
Ray Molina might just be the most supportive dad on television (or Netflix). Julie and the Phantoms does a great job of showing young viewers what healthy versus unhealthy relationships look like, and Julie and her dad are no exception.
Ray treats both of his kids equally while still mourning the loss of his wife. Sure, sometimes he needs a little help from Aunt Tia, but he's always there for Julie and Carlos, and he's always ready to lend a helping hand. Even after Julie betrays his trust by playing a live show after he forbade it, he realizes that she must have had a good reason for doing so. He organizes a little show at their own house, making sure the event is professionally filmed, and helps Julie kickstart her career as a performing artist.
1. Rose
Though it hasn't been officially confirmed yet, some evidence seems to suggest that Rose, who Sunset Curve meets in episode 1, is Julie's mom. It would explain why Julie finds a Sunset Curve T-Shirt and CD in her mother's possession, and why Trevor/Bobby and Julie's mom/Rose were such good friends. Julie also has a ticket to a "Rose and the Petal Pushers" show, which was her mom's band.
In any case, whoever Julie's mom was, they clearly had a strong, healthy relationship. Everyone in the Molina family loves her very much and doesn't want to lose their memories of her. It's Julie's love for Rose that keeps her going and keeps her passion for music ignited. She dedicates her performances to her mom and even finished writing the songs they had worked on when she was alive.
