Is Wanda the MCU’s NEXT big villain?

"No (wo)man knows how bad (s)he is till (s)he tried very hard to be good."

So far, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has given us fans some amazing villains. From the Iron Monger and our first look at AIM in Iron Man to the Red Skull. Then… they gave us Loki. After that, honestly, it must have been hard to come up with another who could top him. They struggled a bit with a few of them. The forgettable villains from the Guardians movies (Ego should have been so much more than he was—his comic counterpart would have been ashamed), and should I even bother to mention The Dark World? The Elves were a joke as villains, which honestly was heart breaking. Thor and the whole of his Norse side has so much involved, we could have done so much with that. But sadly, we got… Dark Elves.

Then they tossed Winter Soldier at us and then tore him away. He could have lasted longer as a villain, but guess they needed him for plot reasons elsewhere. Ultron was, for lack of a better word, lackluster. One movie for a villain who has a history that spans decades within comics? How rude!

With them nearly striking out at every turn, Marvel was due for a home run. Enter: Erik Killmonger. He had everything, didn’t he? Personality, good motives, reasons that made sense. He was going to be loved by the masses. But then… like all good things, the powers that be (Disney or Marvel, whoever you’d like to point the finger of blame at) decided we were not worthy and took him from us. Again, how rude! He could have been so perfect in the future. Did they make up for it by giving us a Loki series? Sure, a little. But not really.

The Cinematic universe has an enormous problem in its future: Villains. While Spider-Man has a rogue’s gallery unlike any other, with the fights between Fox and Disney continuing, it’s very unlikely we’ll see more than the ones we’ve already seen. So who else is there?

Well, they have one huge one that they have already hinted at. Wanda Maximoff. In the WandaVision series, we got a look at Wanda and the dark side within her. We had the hint from Age of Ultron, but WandaVision gave us a full view of what she could have been capable of, had just let herself go.

So here’s the question: Are Marvel building her up to be the next Big Bad?

Honestly, it wouldn’t surprise me in the slightest. In the X-Men comics Wanda’s known for following around Magneto before she turned and joined with the Avengers .

And does anyone remember Avengers: Disassembled? The story where the Avengers (and Stephen Strange) erase Wanda’s mind and make her forget she had children? Yeah, she went bonkers there. Took out all of her anger on the Avengers and caused death and mayhem. Her mind shattered because of the loss of her children and the betrayal of her friends, the people she had trusted with her whole life. Not a single one of them had tried to work with her through her pain, instead they just made her forget so they could move on? Doesn’t seem heroic in the slightest.

Then again, what her brother does isn’t any better to her. M-Day. The House of M. While these story-lines haunt most X-Men fans today, they are legendary stories that most, if not all, X-Men fans long to see on the big screen. Then again, even Wanda herself (the lovely Elizabeth Olsen) has stated that she had a desire to do the House of M story-line. We got a little taste of Disassembled during WandaVision, but so far we haven’t gotten too close to HoM. Mostly because Fox is holding the X-Men and mutants hostage.

If Fox ever lets the X-Men go, I believe we will get the full scope of Wanda tipping over to the dark side, I would probably die in my theater seat if I ever heard her utter the words “No More Mutants” after we just get mutants. But it would be out of pure joy. Why?

Because Wanda Maximoff as a villain is one of my favorite bits of the Marvel Comics history ever. She isn’t like every other villain out there. Money did not motivate her, or some racist mind set. Nor does she have a plan for world domination, or a plan to half the population of the planet. She only wants her family to be whole and to be left alone. She wants to live a normal life. But no one is allowing her to do that. Someone is always there to step into her life and ruin it by killing her husband or taking her children away from her.

While in the Cinematic Universe, Wanda’s powers took Billy and Tommy from her. The months of manipulation from Agatha did not help. I don’t believe for a second that the twins are gone for good. Not with the rest of the brief hints throughout the Cinematic Universe leading towards a certain young adult grouping of heroes that I will not get into here.

Thanos, however, killed vision, and while Wanda could see revenge done with his death, it obviously did not help any of her issues. Seeing that the government, or who I assume was the government, was ripping him apart caused her to backlash into a mindset that we hadn’t seen since she lost her brother. A death that affected her to the point she could destroy several Ultron bots alone. So, in her most emotionally distraught mindset, could her powers be on a level with that of the strongest Avengers?

Yes. Yes, she could be.

The Scarlet Witch is one of the strongest people in the Cinematic Universe and my hope for the Multiverse of Madness is that we see her step into the role of the Next Big Villain.

Will Marvel push the button on her and let her finally shine as the Scarlet Witch, the Avengers first in house made villain?

I definitively hope so.
