Invented Marvel Character: Night-Night

Bringing my original comic characters to life with some apps and zero artistic ability.

Growing up my dream job was to be a comic book artist/writer. But with very little artistic talent that dream died pretty quickly. Now I do my best to bring my characters to life using apps like factory of heroes, swordmaker, armormaker and you doodle. They don't always turn out looking very good but I get more excited about the concepts and stories behind the characters than how well I can make the character look good. Sometimes my characters are from cultures I am not a part of because I think it fits their story or other aspects about them. I am not a cultural expert but at the very least I hope no one is upset by me using aspects of cultures I'm not a part of and find interesting. That said below is my idea for Night-Night, a mutant with super strength dictated by their sleep patterns.

Originally from the Philippines, Ethan Garcia began attending a school for mutants at age 13. At times he appeared to have uncanny strength but he could not figure out why it was so inconsistent. This worsened as he began at his new school to the point where staff began to wonder if he truly was a mutant. Insecure that he couldn't show off his powers Ethan was discouraged and reluctant to socialize with the other students. However, friendly persistence from the students around him finally brought him out of his shell. From then on his inconsistent super strength came back and his powers were more easy to figure out.

It turned out that Ethan's powers are connected to his sleep cycle. When Ethan is content and not too stressed he can sleep basically at will. Getting about 8 hours of sleep makes him essentially just as strong as a normal teenager but if he "supercharges" his sleep his strength will multiply. This explained his power's inconsistency in the past. When at home in the Philippines, he was content and would oversleep and occasionally have super strength. When he joined his new school he was homesick and not sleeping well so he was never well rested enough to show his power. However, finally making friends eased his mind, let him sleep well again and let his powers reemerge. By age 15 they had very good idea of his powers and decent predictions for just how strong he can be at a given time.

It is not exact but their best understanding is as follows. If Ethan consistently gets 8 hours of sleep he is considered at his "base strength" and can increase his base strength through working out. For every hour above 8 hours of sleep Ethan gets his base strength is multiplied by a somewhat predictable amount for a somewhat predictable duration. For example sleeping 9 hours will make him about twice as strong for around 15 hours or sleeping for 23 hours will make him about 16 times stronger for about 1 hour. In both cases Ethan will basically collapse and sleep when the multiplier wears off. Ethan cannot seem to exceed sleeping for 23 hours and it may even be dangerous for him to try. When Ethan is on the low end of multiplying his strength he does look physically larger but at his strongest he turns into a hulk-like figure. It is less predictable but poor sleep also makes Ethan weaker far more than it does the average person.

Ethan at his strongest

Despite a slow start Ethan has potential to be very powerful. Recently he's discovered a new ability where he can further multiply his strength for just an instant and passing out after, meaning he can channel incredible power into a single punch. This knockout potential and sleep charged powers have led Ethan to call himself Night-Night.
