Hugh Jackman will be back as Wolverine in “Deadpool 3,” Ryan Reynolds announced on his social media Tuesday afternoon. “Deadpool 3” also has an official release date: Sept. 6, 2024.
In a surprise teaser posted on Ryan Reynold's personal Twitter account, the actor is shown seated on a sofa telling fans he was "extremely sad" about missing D23 where there was no Deadpool 3 announcement.
“Hey everyone, we’re extremely sad to have missed D23, but we’ve been working very hard on the next ‘Deadpool’ film for a good long while now,” Reynolds says in the video, referencing the D23 Expo in early September. “I’ve had to really search my soul on this one. His first appearance in the MCU obviously needs to feel special. We need to stay true to the character, find new depth, motivation, meaning. Every ‘Deadpool’ needs to stand out and stand apart. It’s been an incredible challenge that has forced me to reach down deep inside. And I…I have nothing. Yeah, just completely empty up here. And terrifying. But we did have one idea.”
“Hey, Hugh, you want to play Wolverine one more time?” Reynolds asks as Jackman walks by in the background.
“Yeah, sure, Ryan,” Jackman replies. The video ends with Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You” — subtitled as “I will always love Hugh” — and a “Coming Hughn” teaser. The Deadpool logo appears, then is quickly sliced up by Wolverine’s adamantium claws.

Following Disney's acquisition of 20th Century Fox, "Deadpool 3," which will formally enter the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is being directed by Shawn Levy, who collaborated with Reynolds on "Free Guy" and "The Adam Project." The writers of the original two "Deadpool" movies, Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, returned to pen the third. Even in the family-friendly MCU, Reese has already stated that "Deadpool 3" will maintain its R rating.
The last time X-Men fans saw Jackman as Wolverine was in 2016’s R-rated “Logan,” directed by James Mangold. Wolverine famously died in the end of the film, and Jackman has stated repeatedly that the film was his swan song in the role. So it’s unclear how he’ll appear in “Deadpool 3.” But the character is best known for repeatedly breaking the fourth wall — on film and in the comics — and as Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige recently told Variety, “Anything’s possible in the multiverse.”
Jackman and Reynolds have a lengthy history as superheroes. In 2009's widely derided "X-Men Origins: Wolverine," the first "X-Men" spinoff to centre on Jackman's character, the "Deadpool" star made his on-screen debut as the role. However, that Deadpool was without his recognisable red and black outfit and had his mouth stitched shut. A few years later, Reynolds returned as the witty assassin in a legitimate, R-rated "Deadpool" film.
Deadpool is one of several comic book properties that Disney acquired when it bought 20th Century Fox in 2019. The X-Men and the Fantastic Four are also set to appear in films over the course of the next few years.
The “Deadpool” films are the top-grossing “X-Men” titles of all time, each earning over $780 million worldwide. The first two films, which debuted in 2016 and 2018, respectively, were released by 20th Century Fox before Disney acquired the studio.
Meanwhile ‘Logan’ director James Mangold who famously ended Wolverine’s story once and for all (or so we were to believe) responds to the “Deadpool 3” news with a simple gif….
The idea that Jackman could reprise the role of Wolverine is deeply exciting. Jackman has played Wolverine across nine films, and his sendoff in Logan was as close to perfect as can be. But to see Jackman and Reynolds together at last (again) will be a second closure for fans.

Was I a Model in Japan?
During my time in Nagoya I worked and lived at the strangely famous hostel and café Nagonoya. With its chequered floors and florescent lighting it felt quite dated, but I think that was supposed to be part of the charm. The dorms were always fully booked on weekends with domestic tourists and there was always a buzz in the downstairs café. Camera crews were constantly in and out of the place interviewing the Japanese staff members who worked the café. I think it had something to do with the egg sandwiches. At least that was what was on most of the merchandise, except for that one dishcloth with the owner’s face on it. Was I being employed by a local celebrity?
