House of the Dragon

House of the Dragon takes place at a time in history when the Targaryens rule the kingdom with the help of a group of mighty dragons, but we know that they will eventually die out and will only return when 3 eggs are delivered to one. princess in exile who is forced to marry against her will (yes, we are talking about Daenerys ).

Dragons are the most powerful creatures in the realm (every Targaryen has one and Rhaenyra uses hers to show her father she's not just a princess) and that's what allows the Targaryens to maintain power and intimidate their enemies, but That doesn't last forever and the story reaches a point where Daenerys and her brother live on the other side of the world, afraid that someone will kill them because they no longer have the dragons to protect them.

What happens to them then? It is a fact that many of the dragons participate in the famous Dance of the Dragons , where there is a confrontation between the Targaryens themselves, which ends with the death of many of the dragons that accompany them.

But, the books say that after the war there is still a dragon named Morning, which belongs to Daemon Targaryen's daughter from his second marriage, plus two other riderless dragons and a few hatchlings that are found in the Dragon Pit, but things get complicated for them too.

Why did the dragons in House of the Dragon become extinct?

House of the Dragon

According to a Quora theory , it could all be connected to the Maesters and Viserys I's illness. We know that the Maesters come from Old Town (where the Hightowers come from ), and it is said that they are not very loyal to the Maesters. Targaryens and who hate anything that can be considered magical, aka dragons.

During the series, it is mentioned that Viserys hasn't been receiving the best care for his illness, which means the Maesters are letting him die, furthermore, only one Maester knew of the tea that Viserys sends to his daughter, and that also points to because they are leaking information to the king's enemies, possibly in order to wipe out the Targaryens.

And it's not just Viserys, the books mention several Targaryens, including one of Rhaenyra's sons, dying from rare diseases, which hints that the Maesters may be poisoning everyone to end the dynasty's reign.

And this brings us to the dragons, after the war, and that only one dragon remains under Targaryen rule (Morning), and two more are abandoned for not having riders, comes the reign of Aegon III, the youngest son of Rhaenyra who goes by the nickname Dragonbane , and he's not very interested in being a dragonrider (especially after losing his own dragon named Stormcloud ) and he's also not interested in anyone else being a dragonrider.

Aegon III stops caring about the care of the dragons, and according to Quora 's theory , this leads the Maesters to poison all the babies, as a way to end the reign of the Targaryens for good, and not just to end his near-absolute power, but rather the issue of madness that plagues the family and has dire consequences for the kingdom.

And if the dragons died in the war and the few that remained were poisoned, where did the Khaleesi dragons come from ? One theory is that they come from Vhagar, which belonged to Aegon The Conqueror's wife, who may have had them at a time when no one knew where she was, though they may also be from a dragon that lost its rider and left the world. Dragon Pit before the battle.
