‘House Of The Dragon 3’: The 15 Best Quotes From The ‘Games Of Thrones’ Prequel’s Third Season
From chastising a rotten king to how one identifies a fake Baratheon, HOTD3's best quotes are simply memorable.
Season 3 of House of the Dragon (2022–present) was a marked improvement over its tepid second season, although it still featured unnecessary subplots and the occasional sluggish sequence.
Loosely based on George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood (2018), the Game of Thrones prequel’s third season deviates much from the novel. Still, just as in the book, there is practically nobody worth rooting for in either Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen's Team Black or King Aegon II's Team Green.
There are a few spectacular battles and dragon action, but you rarely care if a major character dies (except for "the most hated man" in the series) or which dragon falls next (Sheepstealer being the exception).
The main highlights of the notorious Dance of the Dragons civil war remain the Battle Above the God’s Eye between Princes Daemon and Aemond Targaryen, and The Storming of the Dragonpit, foreshadowed in one of Queen Helaena Targaryen's prophetic dreams. Viewers however have to wait until these dragon-ending events materialize in House of the Dragon’s fourth and final season due in 2028.
Though this season's writing has been underwhelming, when it was good, it was very, very good.

1. “You, who had every advantage in life, who had every chance to shine. A dragon so beautiful they named him after the sun itself. You could have risen to greatness, but instead you trampled your birthright in the mud. You lazed in mediocrity.
"I will tell you the truth. You were a terrible king. But worse than that, you are a terrible man.”
—Lord Larys Strong (Matthew Needham) to King Aegon II Targaryen (Tom Glynn-Carney), finally tired of the latter’s endless whining and moaning in S3E5, “Unbowed and Unbent.” Easily the best speech of the season.
2. “I am the realm’s greatest warrior, and I will die as such. Clear-eyed. Unbent. Glorious in battle… And they will sing songs about it. And Queen Alicent herself will hear them.”
—Ser Criston Cole (Fabien Frankel) to Ser Gwayne Hightower (Freddie Fox), describing how he—the Kingmaker, Lord Commander of the Kingsguard, and Hand of the King to Aegon II—hopes to die in S3E5. Talk about misplaced pride cometh before an epic fall.
3. “I made a promise to the dead, Cole. I told them I'd build a sept out of traitors' bones. I don't have near enough bones yet!”
—Lord Oscar Tully (Archie Barnes) to Criston, before the young Lord Paramount of the Riverlands—with the help of Alysanna “Black Aly” Blackwood—killed off the disillusioned Kingmaker at The Butcher's Ball without the glory and songs he wanted in S3E6, “Faceless Men”.

—Lord Corlys Velaryon (Steve Toussaint) to Lady Baela Targaryen (Bethany Antonia) and his two illegitimate sons, after defeating the Triarchy at The Battle of the Gullet, but having his Driftmark castle High Tide sacked and losing many men, ships, and Crown Prince Jacaerys Targaryen in S3E2, "Rhaenyra Triumphant".
5. “The patient hunter gets the kill.”
—The obnoxious Lord Ormund Hightower (James Norton) to Prince Daeron Targaryen (Benjamin Evan Ainsworth), explaining to the youngest son of King Viserys and Queen Alicent that his military strategy is to slowly expose Queen Rhaenyra as weak and unsuited to rule in S3E6.
6. “Ser Arrion Baratheon has hair of light chestnut. He's also about a foot taller and, as it happens, far more comely.”
—Gwayne to Ormund, explaining to his cousin how he knew the “visiting Baratheons” were assassins sent by Rhaeryna to kill Ormund and their nephew Daeron, in S3E6. Arguably Queen Alicent’s older brother’s finest hour.

—Alyn of Hull (Abubakar Salim) to Corlys, when his biological father chides him for staying loyal to Queen Rhaenyra even though she did not grant him legitimacy in S3E4, “Tumbleton.”

—Alys Rivers (Gayle Rankin) to Prince Aemond (Ewan Mitchell), after the Targaryen prince collapses in front of her despite being warned by his much-older-than-she-looks Harrenhal lover/healer that his mother Alicent will do him harm (which she did by poisoning him) in S3E7, “The Dragon in Winter.”

—Aegon II to Sunfyre, commanding his very-much-alive golden dragon to annihilate Lord Manfryd Mooton of Maidenpool and his army in S3E7. Easily the season’s most breathtaking dragon moment.

—Madam Sylvi (Michelle Bonnard) to Lady Mysaria (Sonoya Mizuno), the brothel proprietor giving the latter sound advice after the Mistress of Whispers attempts to flaunt some self-absorbed power in S3E7.

—Prince Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith) to Queen Rhaeryna (Emma D’Arcy), when the latter gets flustered upon hearing that Aegon and Sunfyre are alive in S3E8, “The Treasons of Tumbleton.”

—Gwayne to Daeron, when the latter asks how they are going to fight against the much larger Prince Daemon-led Team Black army outside Tumbleton gates, in S3E8.

—Queen Helaena Targaryen (Phia Saban) to Rhaenyra, when her half-sister pretends to care about the beautiful waste-feeding beetle she was talking about in S3E8.

—Aegon II to Aemond, when the latter begs for forgiveness upon seeing his king brother at Harrenhal, in S3E8. The Team Green king is actually getting quite becoming.

—A slowly spiraling Rhaenyra (in High Valyrian) to the citizens of King’s Landing, most of whom (if not all) do not care who is on the throne as long as there is food on the table and peace in the land, in S3E8. Also, as any Game of Thrones fan will tell you, she is definitely not the prince that was promised…
All three seasons of House of the Dragon are streaming exclusively on HBO Max. The fourth and final season is due in 2028.
