Season 5 of Greenleaf is the last season for the popular television drama series, created by Craig Wright and executive produced by Oprah Winfrey that airs on OWN. Most fans knew it would be the last season, but they didn't know the season would be so short. The other four seasons had from 10 to 16 episodes, but Season 5 has only 8 episodes with the last one airing on Tuesday, August 11, 2020. When Season 5 ends, there would have been a total of 60 episodes.

The entire season was considered the finale for all the seasons. Therefore, closure was brought to a lot of loose ends during the penultimate episode on August 4.

Greenleaf Family Versus Harmony and Hope

The main issue of the recent episode was keeping the megachurch from being demolished so Harmony and Hope could take over. Trying to keep the mansion was another major focus. Both issues of the megachurch and the mansion seemed to have been connected. It turned out that both issues were resolved with the Greenleafs keeping both. However, there was a major concern at the end of the finale with Bishop James Greenleaf that viewers will have to wait until next week to find out if he lived or died.

How the Church Was Saved

Calvary was spared from demolition in the nick of time when the Greenleaf family showed up at the church and confronted Bob Whitmore about having poor Blacks as Eden Vale’s clients just to take their land. When the soon-to-be candidate for senator couldn't wiggle his way out of that one, Phil stepped up and confirmed what Grace's story.

Then Phil asked Judee for his mother's engagement ring back. Instead of handing it to him, she dropped it on the floor while calling him an "idiot." The camera caught a shot of Charity as Phil picked the ring up off the floor.

Bishop James Greenleaf's Explanation

The patriarch of the Greenleaf family took center stage and explained to the people who had gathered there that he used the deed to his mansion to get a loan to build Calvary. He admitted that with the money he became "fat and happy." Some members of the church supported Bishop Greenleaf. Charity began singing Amazing Grace as Bob, Judee, and Fernando left the church.

Bishop Greenleaf and Lady Mae

Earlier during the day, Bishop Greenleaf served Lady Mae breakfast in bed and presented her with the engagement he used to propose to her the first time. Lady Mae still insisted on settling the issue with Rochelle and Tara first. That was settled when it was discovered that their grandmother was Mrs. Davis because their father Daryl James was her son.

Later that night Lady Mae put on perfume and went to tell her husband that she was ready to get married the next day. However, Bishop Greenleaf couldn’t speak but indicated he wanted a pen. He wrote, “I do" before he slumped over on the bed. Lady Mae said, “I do, too, my love.” She called an ambulance, but it might already be too late.

Predictions for Spinoff

No details have been revealed about a date or what will be included in a spinoff. The followings are predictions from this writer about who might and might not be in a spinoff.

Bishop James Greenleaf is not expected to be in the spinoff. Keith Davis might want to move on to other things. Kerissa has already left the Greenleaf house, and the writer might let her stay gone. In fact, Jacob might reconnect with Basie's widow, Tasha. Therefore, they might be in the spinoff. It will be a change for him because Zora is about to leave as well and take Sophia with her.

The saga with Rochelle and Tara has come to a close. So, they are not expected in the spinoff either. Rochelle mentioned twice that she never wanted the house. She just wanted a confession about the truth.

The ending has come for Bob Whitmore, his daughter Judee, and Fernando. Good ridden to all of them.

Hopefully, Charity will be in the spinoff and get some of the things she desires, such as a loving relationship and a prominent position in the church even though many fans rather than she sticks to singing instead of preaching series that she has consistently talked about.

Final Episode, Final Season

Be sure to watch the final episode of the final season on Tuesday, August 11 at 9 PM so you can see for yourself how the series ends. The Greenleaf family is expected to put the past behind them and move forward with a new beginning.
