Good Luck #2

BOOM! Studios 2019

Written by Matthew Erman

Illustrated by Stefano Simeone

Lettered by Mike Fiorentino

When Good Luck and Bad Luck collide, will humanity survive?

The Unfortunates -- teenagers born with zero luck -- arrive at the heart of the chaotic, reality-threatening event and are soon confronted by the powerful beings that control Luck -- the Constellations!

Meanwhile, the Secretary of Probability and Luck has plans of their own... and knows more than they've let on.

I like the way that this opens and how we see the kids, the original three at least, brief origin of where they were found. Also that we meet this Secretary of Luck & Probability is a snake in the grass which you can tell instantly by the way he speaks adds another layer to this story that is jus getting off the ground. For me the first two issues act like a crescendo as they are building up further and further to its peak. Like sheet music the instruments play a huge role and here those are the layers within the story and how they work together to create the overall story. I love the drama that we see here and how it will affect the story moving forward.

I am a huge fan of the way that his is being told. The story & plot development that we see through how the sequence of events unfold as well as how the reader learns information is presented exceptionally well. The character development that we see through the dialogue, the character interaction as well as how they act and react to the situations and circumstances which they encounter does wonders in portraying these characters as familiar people, familiar to the reader by way those folks they remind them of in their own lives. The pacing is superb and as it takes us through the pages revealing the story the more intrigued we get and the more we want to know.

I am enjoying the way that this is being structured and how the layers with the story continue to grow, evolve, strengthen and newly emerge. The layers contain so many good bits like the characterisation, the plot twists and more and whether they work with the main arc or simply swirl around it they all add depth, dimension and complexity to the story. How we see everything working together to create the story’s ebb & flow as well as how it moves the story forward is achieved exceedingly well.

The interiors here are intriguing. They are far from traditional and so is Simeone so it fits. The linework is impressive and how we see the varying weights and techniques being utilised to create the detail work is extraordinary to see. How we see backgrounds utilised throughout to enhance and expand the moments as well as work within the composition of the panels to bring out the depth perception, sense of scale and the overall sense of size and scope to the story is magnificent to see. The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels show a remarkably talented eye for storytelling. The creativity and imagination that we see is marvellous and it really goes above and beyond what we should expect to see here. The colour work is brilliantly rendered. The various hues and tones within the colours being utilised to create the shading, highlight and shadow work show a great understanding of how colour works.

This is a crazy good little story that takes the idea of luck, good and bad, and personifies them into living embodiments that need to be defeated if the world is going to go back to normal and this lies in the hands of a group of kids who have no luck at all. It is an interesting premise and it’s being executed rather well by a scientist who treats them like lab rats rather than actual children. With its fair share of drama and intrigue thanks to how we see the writing and characterisation which is amplified thanks to these marvellous interiors you’ll be taken on a thrill ride of epic proportions.
