The candidates for the Golden Globes in cinema and television will begin to be known from Los Angeles. Nominations will be announced virtually at 8:35 a.m. ET Wednesday.

The nomination is presented by actresses Sarah Jessica Parker and Taraji P. Henson in an event broadcast live on Facebook and the event's official website.

Hereafter, please find my predicted nominees on the road to the 78th Golden Globe Awards.

Nomadland

Directed by acclaimed Chinese American mastermind, Chloé Zhao, Nomadland is the big favorite to the golden statue. Under its belt, the film holds 124 wins and 76 nominations, including the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival (Italy) and the Audience Award at the Toronto Film Festival (Canada).

At the center of the story is Frances McDormand, a woman over 60 who loses everything in the great economic crisis of 2008 and decides to travel across the US in a motorhome, living a nomadic existence.

With Nomadland, Chloé Zhao closes a thematic trilogy dedicated to characters from the American West, which started with Songs My Brothers Taught Me (2015) and includes The Rider (2017).

Nomadland theatrical release date is unofficially scheduled for February 19, 2021, though that date has not yet been confirmed. It was previously expected to release in theaters on December 4, but currently, the official page for Nomadland on Searchlight’s website says “coming soon.”

The Trial of Chicago 7

Directed and written by Aaron Sorkin, The Trial of Chicago 7 has 27 wins and 84 nominations.

Sorkin’s first love is writing; nonetheless, he has become an acclaimed director after his debut with Molly’s Game in 2017.

The film accounts for the real events surrounding the 1968 Democratic National Convention held August 26–29 at the International Amphitheatre in Chicago, Illinois.

The film accurately depicts the events; hence it has the makings of a successful historical film.

After watching it on Netflix and reading all about the events, Sorkin’s film is a realistic adaptation. Even if the fictional narrative arc introduces chronological changes to keep the audience enticed.

Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom

Directed by George Wolfe, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, starring Academy Award-winning actress Viola Davis and late actor Chadwick Boseman, from Black Panther, this film has 30 wins and 78 nominations.

After watching it on Netflix, I must say it’s a strong contender to the Globes. Watching it, knowing this was Boseman’s last performance, is overwhelming. His death took us all by surprise, as he was only 43 years old and had been battling cancer in secret for some time.

Hence, the acting is fabulous, making Ma Rainey’s a strong contender to the Globes.

The film is an adaptation of August Wilson’s play of the same title, which debuted in the 1980s.

Mank

Directed by emblematic filmmaker David Fincher, Mank has 25 wins and 109 nominations.

The film stars Academy Award-winning actor Gary Oldman and is David Fincher’s first feature since Gone Girl.

Fincher’s close relationship with Netflix — House Of Cards, Mindhunter, and Love, Death + Robots — gave him the edge to feature a black and white film on that platform. The plot is based on a script written by his father, Jack Fincher, who died in 2003, about “the dark side of Hollywood.”

Mank is a true story and takes us to the well-known Golden Age of Hollywood to meet Herman J. Mankiewicz (Gary Oldman), the screenwriter who claimed to be the author of “The World at Your Feet” (1941).

Having watched Mank, I can say that David Fincher created a meta-film that scrutinizes the inner twists and turns of the film-making industry, and we all know how the Academy loves a good old black and white drama.

The Father

Directed by Florian Zeller, who is, according to the Times, “the most exciting playwright of our time.” The Father has 10 wins and 68 nominations.

Starring Academy Award-winning actor Anthony Hopkins, this movie stands tall on its way to the Golden Globes.

The Father portrays the mind-challenging daily life of someone who experiences dementia, focusing on the dynamics between a father, Anthony (Anthony Hopkins), and his daughter Anne (Olivia Colman).

This existentialist family drama reminds us how parents can eventually “become our children” at some point in life.

Thus, the film debates the impact of old age beyond the self-frontiers and into family life dynamics.

Final Thoughts

The Golden Globes are known to be the "antechamber" of the Oscars, despite being more influential than the barometer of predictions (last year, the main awards went to 1917 and Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood).

“The older I get, the more I look at movies as a moving miracle. Audiences are harder to please if you’re just giving them special effects…but they’re easy to please if it’s a good story.” – Steven Spielberg
