Godzilla Vs Kong: The long awaited big screen battle.

This has been a long time coming but did it pan out the way it should have?

The Monsterverse has been impressive from a visual standpoint to say the very least. Denying that would be denying how far visuals have come in the last 15 years. We are capable of seeing almost anything come to life on the big screen these days and the Monsterverse has been proof of that.

As things have hinted towards the Monsterverse was gearing towards the battle of the two most well known Titans. Godzilla Vs Kong. Director Adam Wingard promised a definite winner and he delivered on that front and made it seem plausible from a narrative standpoint. This movie worked for the title which was Godzilla vs Kong but aside from that didn't have much in the way of plot besides a paper thin human story that made little sense.

Millie Bobby Brown replaces Kyle Chandler as the lead human chasing Godzilla and it doesn't really help the film. She's likable yes but it's not believable she could gain access to more information than those in charge have by way of a conspiracy podcast. She is a capable actress but thjs script was not written with the best possible story for any of these characters aside from Kong's connection to Gia. Beyond that almost all human plot was removable with very little effect to the overall plot line this film set out to tell. For those looking for only badass action between the two fighting monsters it worked. For those hoping to see where it launches the franchise next it did very little and it really doesn't add anything we haven't previously seen before.

I will go out on a limb here and say the sequences in King of Monsters were better. A lot of the action was seen in the trailers for this one and while it was still cool to see how it plays out in the finished product it also took me out of the finished product because it was too predictable. Every plot point including the winner was visible from miles away. It just made the most sense but movies don't need to make the most sense and sometimes they need to do the bold thing and figure out a way to make that happen. There have been a lot of rumours that a lot of scenes to make this film more coherent were cut but unless those scenes add more depth it's doubtful this was a narrative worth saving in the long run. It's designed to be exactly what it is. A mindless set of action sequences. I expected more from two monsters who show levels of intelligence far beyond human comprehension.

A Lot of my issues with this film make it seem like I disliked the final product and I did not. I thought Kong was interesting and Godzilla was immediately painted as misunderstood and obviously on the hunt for something bigger. Nothing seemed unpredictable. Not even when the action was about to occur. Not even when the humans were about to figure out the next move. Not when the humans did something smart or foolish. Even big action films like this need that element of surprise to be considered something new and refreshing. For me just saying it's mindless violence between two monsters so what else would I want hurts the movie. It's why we got such predictable human stories with very little thought even put into making the action something new. It felt strictly like the other movies in the series just with both of them appearing in the same movie.

That's why I felt King of Monsters was a much better movie. It gave us the lore of the Titans and gave us amazing visions for those Titans. This was all stuff we have seen before with 2021 visuals and cool effects to make it seem like we are getting something brand new. It's action we have seen before in large scale productions and definitely not above other films of this nature. I would have to see a full cut of this movie with the rest of the key elements to the narrative but if they are worse than what we saw then maybe that isn't worth restoring.

There have been a lot of rumours about WB meddling with runtimes to make it a breeze for cinemas to hold more showings and take in the cash and you can begin to see it over time. Almost every movie clocks in around the 2 hour mark. Give or take 5-10 minutes either way. Even series that have the necessary content built in by way of endless back stories.

It's hopeful that there is a movie or 2 left within this shared idea of a Monster Universe but after Godzilla Vs Kong there really aren't many threads left to explore because they closed all questions that were being posed and didn't make enough out of the human story to help create a story with them in future films. It could serve as a fitting conclusion but I just wish the climax of this thrilling adventure would have been a little better if this was in fact the final time we see any of the Titans in this iteration.
