Superman and Lois has the task of giving us something new and refreshing that still looks and feels like it fits within all of the ongoing stories. That's never an easy task but this show has done exactly that. It has carved out a place for itself among a plethora of superhero content.

Having aired only 5 episodes so far, Superman and Lois has already established an internal struggle within Clark that keeps things moving quickly. That struggle is what needs his attention most. The world or his family. Tyler Hoechlin as Clark Kent/Superman was immediately given this internal turmoil all the while dealing with the sudden and tragic passing of his mother Martha Kent. Hoechlin does it well trying to be the good guy maintaining the fine balance but even Superman doesn't have the ability to be everywhere at all times.

That leads to conflict with Lois' father who expects him to put his Superman duties above all else and while Clark for the most part has been doing that he begins to see the hardships it leaves his family in. He chooses to move his two teenage sons to Smallville so he can be around and more present in their lives as they navigate school and teenage years.

Hoechlin and his chemistry with leading lady Elizabeth Tulloch is what makes this show great. She has that fiery attitude with the sweet and sensitive side when speaking with her boys Jonathan and Jordan. She goes out and dives headfirst into the local stories and happenings all the while trying to keep this massive secret surrounding her husband and his identity and the fact their teenage son also may have similar powers.

One of the biggest areas of praise comes from the fact this show does not look and feel like the typical CW show. It clearly has a bigger budget with more care given to the visuals actually looking good instead of just being there. Some of the things the other shows that are part of the "Arrowverse" have done is create bad angles and even worse lighting in the name of creating a cool looking action shot. Sometimes simpler is better and more practical looking effects can be used by simplifying the shot and how much work it will actually need. The Superman effects have been top notch and creating the powers of Superman have looked even cooler from his flying abilities to his ice breath.

It does have a few moments that feel absolutely like a CW show like when Jordan discovers powers and uses them for social advancements. I do like the dynamic between the two brothers where we see them learn off of one another and learn to cope that their dad is Superman. It changes their perspective on why their dad was always gone during key moments and how he could unexpectedly show up places. Overall the series has a few tender moments where the importance of family is the heart of the story.

Ultimately it does have enough redeeming qualities as a series to warrant me wanting to continue through. The fact it was renewed early also helped it because it opens up more potential plot lines that don't necessarily have to wrap up before the season finale out of caution. It was expected this show would not be a one and done series and it's great to see it happen so early on to allow the writers more creative leeway as the season unfolds.

It's not without flaws. The small town setting doesn't create any plot lines to write home about and Morgan Edge is way too predictable. It will be interesting to see where they take the potential for the big bad this season and the potential fall out that could have on future seasons. As a series it has definitely planted the seeds for this season and beyond and as mentioned above I believe Tyler Hoechlin is as likable as any other actor who has donned the red cape. He has charm, he's likable especially when playing the father figure more and he has the physique to pull off the action sequences.

It is on a bit of hiatus as Supergirl launches into its final season but when this show pops back on the air I will eagerly be anticipating where it goes next.
