A threat of cosmic proportion to DC’s newest (and oldest) universe compels one of the most unusual groups of heroes ever assembled to take on the most mysterious foe they have ever encountered. What started in Detective Comics #1027 explodes out of Dark Nights: Death Metal to tell the story of the generations-spanning history of the DC Universe! Join the original Batman, Kamandi, Starfire, Sinestro, Booster Gold, Dr. Light, Steel, and Sinestro in their quest to save the universe before time runs out… just for the record I love that no one seemed to proofread this blurb with 2 Sinestro’s and no Superboy.

Well I loved this book! Regardless of how many cooks are in the kitchen stirring the pot because it evokes the original Crisis in so many ways. While I am surprised and very much liking the differences in choices this time around and why they are even more different than originally intended has made my day complete. Even better is the fact that we are seeing characters that were forgotten or cast away from previous DC management. Kamandi for instance he and Solivar were brilliant together so to see him here in this role is utterly brilliant in the way that it is handled.

I am thoroughly enjoying the way that this is being told. The story & plot development that we see through how the sequence of events unfold as well as how the reader learns information is presented exceptionally well. How we move through the pages and how the entire book is structured is so amazing well done. Also to incorporate all of the time travellers that we’ve seen throughout DC’s history blew my mind, I mean Per Degaton sigh makes me miss the All-Star Squadron and that other Tales of the Multiverse story extremely. The character development is amazing and while it’s so very, very nice to see them as we know them we also see them still developing and that is a stroke of genius in the writing. The pacing is superb and as it takes us through these moments both familiar and new it really is one hell of a great adventure.

The interiors here are absolutely fabulous. With each segment we see so much of the past, even if Superboy is a part of the Legion whereas we all know he wasn’t there for this adventure. Sigh but Chemical King well thank you! The linework is amazing and how the varying weights and techniques are being utilised throughout to create this level and quality of detail work is stunning. The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels show some brilliant eyes for storytelling. The colour work that we see is divine. How the various hues and tones within the colours are being utilised to create the shading, highlights and shadow work shows real mastery over colour.

Just the way that this flows and how everything works together to create the books ebb & flow is spectacular. The mix of characters that we see and the roles they play not to mention that the reveal we see left me speechless. Even if I’m not entire up to speed on who it is in reality, just my mind and I cannot wait to see if I’m right. You can most assuredly read this without having read anything in the whole Dark Metal mishegas and enjoy the heck out of it. You really need to be reading this one folks.
