Fight Girls #2

AWA Upshot Studios 2021

Created, Written & Illustrated by Frank Cho

Coloured by Sabine Rich

Lettered by Sal Cipriano

Ten hard-as-nails women face off in an ancient contest of champions where the winner truly takes all: the title of "Queen of the Galaxy." To win the challenge each contestant must survive the hazards of the planet's harsh landscape, the ferocious predators on and below its surface, and their fellow contestants. This edition of the contest has a twist: one of the contestants is an infiltrator who has her eye on something bigger than the prize. Who is she and what does she really want?

I honestly believe this is the perfect vessel for Frank to really get to shine. His women are gorgeous and have different body types, yes they are all fit and shapely but no two look alike, which I find sensationally well done. I still wanna know if she killed #1 or just knocked her out because I want her to show up and throw a monkey wrench in all this. Meanwhile I do have a favourite and she’s a threat to #7 so it’ll be interesting to see where this is going to go because the rivalry we’re seeing is pretty thrilling.

I am thoroughly enjoying the way that this is being told. The story & plot development we see through how the sequence of events unfold as well as how the reader learns information is presented exceptionally well. The character development we see through the dialogue, the character interaction and how they act and react to the situations and circumstances which they encounter fleshes the characters out beautifully. The pacing is superb and as it takes us through the pages revealing more and more of the story it brings us into this world sensationally well.

I greatly appreciate the way that we see this being structured and how the layers within the story continue to emerge, grow, evolve and strengthen. As we see the obstacles in this section of the course the imagination and creativity of the reader is phenomenal. How we see the characterisation and the plot twists that we see add this great depth, dimension and complexity to the story. How we see everything working together to create the story’s ebb & flow as well as how the reader learns information is achieved exceptionally well. The whole direction of the book and the side plot for instance is where the intrigue really amps up.

I am in love with the interiors here. The linework is exquisite and how we see the varying weights and techniques being utilised to create this level & quality of detail work throughout the book really leaves a great impression. The backgrounds we see are well utilised and while the course doesn’t have room for a lot it’s nice to see that they are utilised in a way that isn’t just simply a solid colour. What we see does a marvellous job within the composition of the panels bringing out the depth perception, sense of scale and the overall sense of size and scope to the story. The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels show a masterful eye for storytelling. The colour work is gorgeous. The various hues and tones within the colours being utilised to create the shading, highlights and shadow work shows a spectacular understanding how colour works.

I am finding this a whole lot more interesting than I had thought it was going to be. While we still don’t know a whole lot about ruling the empire aspect of this but everything else is coming across crystal clear. So this really does manage to involve the reader in the story and seeing the obstacles really ignites the creativity and imagination so being engaged in this is so easy. It really is a fun book with some stellar writing & characterisation and these utterly gorgeous interiors that you’ll not be able to resist enjoying.
