Eternals: Thanos Rises #1

Eternals are created, not born. They have families, but their families make no new children. It’s simply not what Eternals do. Some of them thought they could find a way to change that and believed it would be for the best. They were terribly, terribly wrong.

The Eternals book has been utterly fabulous so when this was announced I got really excited. This doesn’t let me down one single iota either and that’s even better. It is going to be hard to talk about a lot of things here without spoiling anything but I’m going to try my darndest. Now I don’t know about everyone but I’ve been a fan of the Eternals for a long time now and it is nice to see them finally getting a proper in-depth look and between their own title and with Thanos we see how different factions and different thoughts and opinions are dealt with. Mind you a long-lived people like this, there has to be certain safeguards in place or it could be one eternal war. This excites me and even more after reading the issue.

I am super pumped about the way that this is being told. The story & plot development that we see through how the sequence of events unfold as well as how the reader learns information is presented exceptionally well. The character development that we see through the dialogue, the character interaction as well as how they act and react to the situations and circumstances which they encounter are beautifully presented. How we see their personalities shine through all this bloody brilliant. The pacing is excellent and as it takes us through the pages introducing us to the story, the characters and the world they inhabit, it’s a much different look at the Marvel Universe then you are used to seeing, and it creates the right feel of drama that you can’t get enough of.

How we see this being structured and how the layers within the story emerge, grow and evolve is magnificently rendered. The layers open up so many avenues and only a fraction will be explored but regardless what they all do is add some wonderful depth, dimension and complexity to the story. How everything works together to create the story’s ebb & flow as well as how it moves the story forward is achieved exceedingly well.

The interiors here are bloody gorgeous! The linework we see is exquisite and how the varying weights and techniques are being utilised to bring about this level & quality of detail within the work we see is extraordinary to see. How we see the backgrounds are nicely done but we could always see more of them being utilised. How they enhance and expand the moments as well as work within the composition of the panels to bring out the depth perception, sense of scale and the overall sense of size and scope to the story. The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels show a remarkably talented eye for storytelling. The various hues and tones within the colours being utilised to create the shading, highlights and shadow work shows a brilliant eye for how colour works. I mean it too from the applications to the choice of colours and how light sources are utilised everything works in such a stupendous level.

How Titan becomes a home, how the Eternals deal with their problems and so much more are presented to the reader here. For an added bonus the seriousness of what we see is balanced out with some humour strewn throughout at interesting places I might add. As the writing is smart and interesting and the characterisation is intelligent and witty while the interiors do a phenomenal job bringing it all to life exceptionally well. This will surprise and thrill you with how much about the Eternals is exposed while realising how little you knew leaving you with the desire to want to know more.
