Elvira Meets Vincent Price #03

Dynamite Entertainment 2011

Written by David Avallone

Illustrated by Jua Smu

Coloured by Walter Pereyrqa

Lettered by Taylor Esposito & Elizabeth Sharland

Elvira and Vincent’s Ghost arrive in Cairo, hot on the trail of the missing movie that can save the world from Amun-Ra! It’s a game of cat-and-mouse among the pyramids, as a pair of silent comedy assassins stalk Elvira and Vincent, ancient crypts are infiltrated, angry goddesses are awakened, and tourists are confused… in a story we call “Raiders of the Lost Schlock!” Adventure, horror, and temples of doom but no crystal skulls, we promise…

I am having so much fun with this book. What David is doing with the writing is sensational and all the little “in jokes” that we see scattered throughout just make it all the more fun. This is supposed to be tongue-in-cheek kitschy fun and it certainly delivers on that note but there’s also a tad more serious undertone to the story that I’m also thoroughly impressed with. I don’t know if anyone but David would be able to balance the tightrope of the two. I cannot recommend that you read this highly enough because it really encompasses everything we’ve come to expect out of these two characters and their careers and by combining the two together it creates this weird synergy that can only happen in comics.

I’m a huge fan of the way that this is being told. The story & plot development that we see through how the sequence of events unfold as well as how the reader learns information is presented exceptionally well. The character development that we see through the narration, the dialogue, the character interaction as well as how we see them act and react to the situations and circumstances which they encounter which does a marvellous job in showcasing their personalities as they grow and evolve. The pacing is excellent and as it takes us through the pages revealing more and more of the story the more invested and involved we become.

I am very much enjoying the way that this is being structured and how we see the layers within the story continue to emerge, grow, evolve and strengthen. I am also liking the way that these layers open up new avenues to be explored. Whether or not all avenues will be explored they all add this great depth, dimension and complexity to the story. How we see everything working together to create the story’s ebb & flow as well as how it moves the story forward are impeccably handled.

The interiors here are absolutely and utterly delightful. The linework is strong, clean and crisp while the varying weights and techniques we see being utilised create this great amount of detail within the work. How we see backgrounds being utilised enhance and expand the moments beautifully while also working within the composition of the panels to bring out the depth perception, sense of scale and the overall sense of size and scope to the story. I’m a fan of the creativity and imagination that we see here as well, the way Vincent shimmers and glows is exceptionally well rendered. The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels show a remarkable eye for storytelling. The various hues and tones within the colours being utilised to create the shading, highlights and shadow work show a fantastic understanding of how colour works. Again see the shimmer/glow surrounding Vincent for a prime example. Also there appears to be a nod to Laurel and Hardy in here and I’m loving that immensely.

I have to say that the more we get into this series the more I'm enjoying it. This is as complete a package regarding it’s characters, story, stereotypes and the interior artwork so that we get to experience is along the lines of pure joy. The writing is phenomenal and the characterisation is next level spot on while the interiors here are bloody magnificent.
