No one should have to earn the right to be themselves.

Dramatically Incorrect Inc. presents “Coming Out: The Musical,” a staged workshop production by Paul Gymziak. The story follows Jake, a high school student struggling to accept his identity. He faces bullying, family expectations, and fears of rejection. Ultimately, Jake realizes being himself is enough.

“Coming Out: The Musical” is directed by Paul Gymziak, a devoted four-decade theater veteran. He is an actor, director, and choreographer. He also founded Dramatically Incorrect Inc. While he has directed several productions, ranging from classic plays to contemporary musicals, creating an original musical has been one of his greatest ambitions.

“My passion has always been creating a welcoming space where people of all backgrounds and experience levels can discover their voice through theatre,” said Gymziak.

Gymziak has spent years working on countless rewrites, song revisions, and character changes. Most of “Coming Out: The Musical” is inspired by real conversations with friends, community members, and LGBTQIA+ youth that transpired over time.

“I wanted to create something honest - something that reminds people that no one should ever feel alone simply because of who they are,” said Gymziak.

This is a staged workshop production. Gymziak said that workshops are an essential part of developing new musicals. Audience reaction plays a key role in shaping the play. They discover what elements resonate the most.

11 cast members are involved. When it came to casting for this workshop musical, Gymziak said he was looking for performers who could embody truth, support one another, and foster a safe rehearsal environment.

Lauren Fohlin auditioned because she was drawn to the heart of the story. Along with playing the role of June, Fohlin is also the show’s co-choreographer. She has worked to ensure that movement strengthens the show's emotional impact.

“As someone who believes in the power of storytelling, I knew this was a project that could make a real impact,” Fohlin said.

Rehearsals have been a collaborative and rewarding experience for everyone involved. On the first day, Gymziak said the cast talked about building a trusting space. They also discussed the heavy themes about bullying, abuse, and mental health.

In these conversations, Gymziak said the cast has helped him discover moments he never imagined in the script. “Theatre is never created by one person alone, and this project has become better because of everyone involved,” Gymziak said.

Auditions also brought fellow actor Doug Reed, who joined the production unexpectedly.  Initially, Reed read scenes for another performer. Gymziak cast Reed as Luke because he liked how he embodied the character.

Reed praises Gymziak’s presentation of character empathy. “Paul has an understanding that everyone has emotions and it’s difficult for everyone just dealing with life,” the Chelmsford resident said.

Veteran performer Beverly Marzioli, of Haverhill, plays Principal Mrs. Reynolds, along with several ensemble roles. The idea of performing in an original show appealed to her. Marzioli said the production’s themes are still significant today.

“In today’s political climate when the rights of the LGBTQ+ community are being threatened, it’s important to tell these stories,” she said.

Gymziak agrees, hoping that the show will resonate with audiences and create conversations. He emphasized that “Coming Out: The Musical” has themes about identity, acceptance, and being yourself. While the story centers on one young man’s journey, Gymziak said he hopes audiences recognize its universal message.

“That’s why stories like this remain important,” Gymziak said. “They create empathy, encourage conversation, and remind audiences that every person’s story matters.”

Audiences are invited to attend “Coming Out: The Musical” at Dramatically Incorrect Inc. in Leominster, MA. Production dates are Aug. 14 - Aug. 16. Tickets are sold online.
