Prior to 1992, no one—no monster, nor villain, nor alien with superior technology, had been able to put as much fear into Superman as much as this fearsome foe had: Doomsday!
Doomsday evokes images of dread, catastrophe, and cataclysm in the mind. It evokes the end of everything and the collapse of civilization. In The Death of Superman, Booster Gold is the one who actually names this monster trapped in the depths of the Earth for millennia.
Doomsday is an unstoppable behemoth, an engine of destruction whose sole purpose is the destruction of The Last Son of Krypton: Superman. When we encounter Doomsday first, in The Death of Superman, he is on a collision course towards Metropolis and actually utters its name.
The first encounter of Superman with Doomsday ends in death. Both combatants deal each other the killing blow, Superman is laid to rest and Doomsday is sent into space on an asteroid. Doomsday is the only foe known to have felled Superman in combat, a feat that seems to betray his mysterious and monstrous origin.
Doomsday's Origin Story
The nightmares continue in Superman/Doomsday: Hunter/Prey, a three-issues storyline recounting Superman's quest for Doomsday in space. Superman has nightmares of the monster at night from coming from death and decides to go into space in order to stop Doomsday once and for all.
In Superman/Doomsday: Hunter/Prey #2 we get an origin story of Doomsday:
Bertron's experiments on genetics on Krypton, 250,000 years ago
250,000 years ago, on Krypton, a scientist named Bertron and his team designed experiments on a Kryptonian baby in order to evolve him and adapt him to Krypton's very early harsh climate. Krypton experimented early with genetics and wanted to design the perfect Kryptonian, capable of dealing with the planet's "beasts" and threats to Krypton's survival (Superman/Doomsday: Hunter/Prey #2).
Doomsday was designed as a creature capable of storing solar energy for a millennium, killing any creature, and evolving to come back from certain death "into a superior being" to kill the creature that caused its death. Upon his evolution, Bertron called the creature: "Beautiful!" The Ultimate as Bertron had called him, managed to survive outside of the scientists' lab for two years, decimating the beasts to extinction. After completing his task, he turned on his creators and destroyed the genetics lab (Superman/Doomsday: Hunter/Prey #2).
Eventually, Doomsday found a supply ship from Bertron's lab, boarded it and "bounced from world to world, gaining a reputation as a fearsome killing force" (Superman/Doomsday: Hunter/Prey #2).
Doomsday is a perfect engine of destruction, a monster design of evolution on the planet Krypton. His ability resides in his power of adaptation to counter any threat sensed by the monster with regenerative physical force. He evolves from any attack dealt to him, and displays a counter attack that completely takes down his foe. InSuperman/Doomsday: Hunter/Prey #3, Doomsday develops a counter attack to Superman's full blast of heat vision that was meant "to turn up the heat until he drops."
Doomsday throws a rock to interrupt Superman's heat vision blast
During the battle, Doomsday displays regenerative and adaptive abilities such as closing his auditory canals in response to Superman's sonic attack or healing from a wound from Superman's plasma sword.
Let it be known that in 'Superman/Doomsday: Hunter/Prey #3', Superman's abilities are augmented and supplied by advanced New God technology from Mother Box who actually also heals Superman's wounds.
Both characters are able to withstand the destruction of the planet Calaton by the explosion of its nuclear power plants with "a force equal to a million nuclear blasts" (Superman/Doomsday: Hunter/Prey #3).
The Legend of Doomsday
The legends say that the monster is beyond conventional death. In Superman/Doomsday: Hunter/Prey #1, Darkseid fells Doomsday with the full force blast of his Omega Beams. Only for the monster to get up and beat down on Darkseid.
Doomsday is beyond conventional death. Superior physical force cannot match him, advanced technology cannot conquer him, and godly power is not sufficient. Only catastrophe: the end of the universe!
At the end ofSuperman/Doomsday: Hunter/Prey #3, Doomsday is taken by Waverider who had been assisting Superman in the battle with chronal energy and temporal battle assessment and information on Doomsday, to the end of the time:
"There, entropy awaits like a ravenous beast, where it drains all energy and life. In this far distant future, the universe is dying, crushed by this entropy."- Waverider, Superman/Doomsday: Hunter/Prey #3
The End of Time
It is the Omega Point.
