Celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Eighth Doctor’s debut!

Trapped in a parallel universe, Rose Tyler believed her adventures with the Doctor were over. Now, pulled by a mysterious energy into this reality, she must work with the Doctors (Matt Smith and Paul McGann) to end the tyrannical rule of the warmongering Bad Wolf Empress.

Right off the bat this makes me want to go back and rewatch the beginning of Rose Tyler’s story. There is certainly something to be said for nostalgia and for me personally the time she spent with the 9th and 10th Doctors were the best of the series after it came back. Yes I understand that this is all subjective but for this is how I feel. Anyhoo, I already knew after seeing the creators working on this that it was going to be another epic story and then to see Rose being such a vital player in this made me love it all the more and that was before I even got started here. Spoiler Alert, I was right this really is already an epic in the making as the recap we see of Rose’s life leads us directly into the story at hand.

I’m in love with the way that this is being told. The story & plot development that we see through how the sequence of events unfold as well as how the reader learns information is presented exceptionally well. The character development that we see through the narration, the dialogue, the character interaction as well as how we see them act and react to the situations and circumstances which they encounter does a magnificent job in spotlighting these ever changing, see evolving, personalities. The pacing is excellent and as it takes us through the pages introducing the story and the players we are left captivated by the events that we see.

I’m very much enjoying the way that this is being structured and how we see the layers within the story begin to emerge and grow. I also like the way we see the layers within the story open up new avenues to be explored and this adds so much great depth, dimension and complexity to the story. How we see everything working together to create the story’s ebb & flow as well as how it moves the story forward are immaculately handled.

I’m such a huge fan of the interiors here. The linework is clean, crisp and sharp with the varying weights and techniques being utilised as they are we see such great attention to detail within the work. Rose’s throne made of Dalek’s is cute and its little details like this that really stand out. That we see backgrounds being utilised as they are to enhance and expand the moments as well as how they work within the composition of the panels to bring out the depth perception, sense of scale and the overall sense of size and scope to the story is exceptionally well rendered. The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels show a remarkably talented eye for storytelling. The various hues and tones within the colours being utilised to create the shading, highlights and shadow work shows a sensational understanding of how colour works and how to maximise its effects.

This is a beautifully done introduction to a new story arc. What’s better is that while we know the cast we are seeing them in a very new and different light and this makes it feel fresh and exciting. We’ve seen a lot of time spent on Bad Wolf and if this is going to be something that works in concert with that then I know, KNOW, we’re in for something amazing. With some strong, well thought out writing and delightfully familiar characterisation and these stunning interiors this is the start of something huge.
