Chapter 2

Rebecca jumped, her chair losing balance and she crashed to the floor. “Oh God, I am so sorry!” The man who’d been staring at her knelt beside her to help her up.

“I’m fine…” Rebecca muttered, waving him away even as her head hurt. With a muttered curse, she realized her coffee had spilled everywhere and moved to clean it up.

The young man grabbed napkins and helped her clean up the mess.

“Oh, you don’t have to do that.” She whispered.

“Oh no, forgive me for startling you.” He replied. Their hands brushed slightly and Rebecca felt a surge of energy shoot through her. The young man did as well from the look on his face and he stared at her again intently but this time with awe. Rebecca got up, brushing herself off before she said,

“Uh…thank you.” The young man nodded, getting up to throw the napkins in a nearby garbage can. He turned to her with a smile that made her heart skip a beat. Rebecca hadn’t noticed how handsome he was and with the lopsided, charming grin he certainly would have dozens of girls wanting after him. Rebecca though wasn’t easily charmed and crossed her arms over her chest and asked firmly,

“Why were you watching me?” There was something mysterious about him. His skin was very pale, and for a second, she thought she saw could see through him. But she erased the idea from her mind. His hair needed brushing, but she couldn’t look away from his eyes. They were a deep blue, and so bright the seemed to have a light of their own. He wore a brown leather jacket that showed off his broad shoulders, a bright green-blue shirt underneath that brought out the blue in his eyes, and finally light brown shoes with faded blue jeans belted around his waist, not sagging low on his butt to show off his boxers.

He shuffled slightly at her question, which she thought was funny. “The look on your face as you were reading…was cute. A-and I just couldn’t figure a way to introduce myself.”

“Oh.” Rebecca blushed, feeling slightly uncomfortable now. She didn’t like being noticed, preferring to stay in the shadows.

“I’m sorry for making you uncomfortable and startling you.” The young man insisted. The sincerity on his eyes made her relax and Rebecca smiled softly.

“It’s alright.” She reached out her hand, “My name’s Rebecca.”

“Jacob.” He responded, taking it. His hand was cold, but there was that feeling again, almost like a large shock of static electricity. Her heart started to race and blood rushed to her face when he laid his other hand on top and said, “Thank you, for being so understanding.”

“Uh…sure…” Rebecca yanked back her hand then turned to grab her things. “I-it was nice to meet you Jacob, but I’ve got to get going.”

“Can I come to call on you….I-I mean can we meet again some time?” His sudden question stopped her for a second. He actually wanted to see her again? She looked up at him with wide eyes. He smiled gently, his blue eyes telling her he was sincere. Rebecca tucked a stray strand of hair behind her ear as her nerves increased.

“Well…I suppose we could…”

“…Get coffee..?” he offered. “I promise not to spill yours next time.” She giggled softly and he smiled brighter.

“Sure, okay.” She took out a small sheet of paper and wrote her name and number down and gave it to him.

“Great, I’ll give you a call then.” He said before fleeing the shop and around the corner. Rebecca blinked in surprise and confusion then threw on her coat and grabbed her keys. Her mind was still whirling long after she had left the café, not noticing Jacob watching her go with regret in his eyes.
