A Must-Read Comic Review

Damian Wayne & Jonathan Kent.

From the very moment I opened the comic to the first page, I was hooked. Initially, I came across Supersons because of the YouTube channel ComicsExplained. I highly recommend it for any and everyone who's interested in both Marvel and DC universes. That aside, the story of Supersons centers around Damian Wayne and Jonathan Kent, sons of our favorite heroes Batman and Superman.

Similar to the movie Dunkirk, Supersons dives right into the issues at hand, rather than giving us a backstory on the next generation of heroes. A relationship between the two main characters is already established and we can see very clearly that they have a lot of bonding left to do. If I had to compare their dynamic with anyone, I strongly believe that they are similar to Goku and Vegeta or rather, their own fathers.

It is shown that Jonathan has a lot of catching up to do in terms of superhero ability, unlike Damian, who's already quite skilled. Despite the natural talent our Superboy has, it's clear that his parents had no intention of making him a hero at a young age. They wanted Jonathan to grow up as a human being first, someone with a moral compass and someone who doesn't have to rely on his powers in order to be seen as a hero. Damian also gets the spotlight and while he might come across as a little off putting, we can see that he’s the type of character that’ll grow on us if we give him a chance.

He might be incredibly skilled and knowledgeable, but the fact that he wants to be a kid and make friends is there in the script that Tomasi writes. He wants to be friends with Jonathan, even though it only seems like he’s using him or teaming up with him for his own agenda. Beneath that tough exterior is a boy who’s trying to make a connection, though his methods could use a little work.

Another thing that makes Supersons great is the fact that while the worlds of our young heroes might be different, the fact that they are not only still children but young boys is showcased heavily within the comic. They bicker the way normal children would and try to one up each other whenever they find an opportunity. Even though there are serious issues highlighted within the comic, it doesn't shy away from the fact that this story is about two boys growing up together.

What makes the comic great is that Tomasi understands the boys and he highlights their strengths and weaknesses. The comic’s focus is the inevitable partnership between the boys and it’s great that we don’t suffer a cliché story about how they become friends in under five seconds. They are both headstrong the way kids are supposed to be and their interaction with each other is completely natural rather than forced. Even though they have different ways of approaching right and wrong, the fact remains that they believe in doing the right thing.

Tomasi does a fantastic job of cramming in a long history of the boys’ parents and the way they tick. The approach he uses in showcasing our favorite heroes and their kids’ personality is downright beautiful. It has that sort of appeal that will want new and old readers wanting more. For an in depth dive into the world of Supersons, I highly recommend checking out the video by ComicsExplained. If it weren't for this channel, I wouldn't have bought the first three issues of Supersons. As for the rating of the first issue of Supersons, I give it a 10/10. (I'm probably being biased because of Damian Wayne, but whatever.)

I am an avid fanatic when it comes to sci-fi, anime, and novels. I love DC and Marvel comics, but if I had to choose a hero to save my ass--it would definitely be Batman.
