Dangerous Lies - A Netflix Movie Review

In spite of some flaws, I actually enjoyed 'Dangerous Lies.'

Always be careful about what you tell people. You never know what lies will come back to haunt you.

Dangerous Lies is a 2020 Netflix film about a young couple under investigation after the death of their wealthy foreman. Having left his estate to his caregivers in his will, Katie investigates further while Adam takes advantage of this new opportunity.

In spite of some flaws, I actually enjoyed Dangerous Lies. It is a film geared towards a young adult audience struggling to make lives of their own. There could have been a better approach to some angles of the story that would have made it a stronger film.

After discovering Camila Mendes from the series Riverdale, I was impressed with the mature demeanor that she showcased in Dangerous Lies. Katie was the driving force of the film. She proved to be the conscious, standing up for herself and never letting her voice be overshadowed.

Adam’s character could have been better if writers focused on one angle. Because he never had the money he decides to buy expensive items and pay off the debts which were holding him back from living the life he wanted. If writers stayed on a better track, I think Adam would have a better arc.

The relationship between Katie and Adam is key. They are a young couple. Now that they have the advantage of taking over this expensive house to live the life they desired, it tests their relationship. Mendes and Jessie T. Usher (Adam) save the film with their chemistry. Ignoring the plot holes, I like how they just went with it.

Expect an appearance by Elliot Gould. He brings earnestly to his portrayal of a lonely wealthy man. He made me smile whenever he interacted with Katie or Adam, trying to understand their life, rather than gloating about his lifestyle.

Supporting characters didn’t make much sense to the plot, either coming off as foolish villains or suddenly becoming a threat out of nowhere. Jamie Chung, Cam Gigandet, and Sasha Alexander were great in their parts. If writers spent better attention to detective work, they would have had a better impact, instead of laughable moments.

Dangerous Lies could have been a better film. The concept of the film was great, except it wasn’t executed very well. A number of inaccuracies and plot holes are in the finished product. One element which took place at the beginning of the film is given an unreasonable subplot that is never explained thoroughly. It didn’t connect with the events.

Money plays an important theme. I related to Katie and Adam’s ordeal. As someone who just graduated from college, it is not easy to adjust to life on your own. I thought that Dangerous Lies was an accurate depiction of young people and their struggle to make a living on their own. I agree that some of their behavior and decisions were strange, mainly due to the writing.

David Golden knew what story he was directing, but I think he struggled with which angle to take. He should have paid closer consideration to what the final product of his story looked like. The film is out of place. Aside from the story, he conducted great direction with the acting. I’m sure that behind the scenes everyone had a clear understanding of the film, but it got lost in the process.

I am surprised by all the negative reviews of this movie. While watching, I was actually intrigued to find out what would happen next. Before you make assumptions, watch Dangerous Lies. It is worth it for the acting and the message.
