'Christopher Robin' — A Movie Review

You know what the best thing to do is? Sometimes the best thing to do is absolutely nothing at all.

Oh, where, oh where has Christopher Robin gone? What, he has grown up out from his childhood and has forgotten about his favorite friends in the hundred-acre woods?!

Christopher Robin is a nostalgic film directed by Marc Foster taking audiences back to adventures with Winnie the Pooh and all his friends. Starring Ewan McGregor as an adult Christopher Robin and the many other talented voices of our favorite characters, children and adults of all ages are in for a fun tale.

I remember reading and watching all the Winnie the Pooh tales when I was a kid. They were always so fun to enjoy and sing along to all the songs. I remember the times where I couldn’t stop laughing because of Winnie the Pooh’s hilarious one-liners. I even forgot how philosophical Pooh could be.

Christopher Robin is visually stunning. Our favorite woodland characters are creative CGI puppets which resemble stuffed animals. It’s the most memorable part of the film and shows audiences that filmmakers can always take risks in new animation challenges.

As for the plot, it’s similar to the 1991 film Hook which stars Robin Williams as a grown-up Peter Pan. In both Hook and Christopher Robin, the main hero has grown up, forgetting about their imaginations. Now, they don’t have time for fun, putting aside their children’s imagination for work.

Now that his world is starting to disappear, Winnie the Pooh, who has been waiting for years by the tree where his beloved friend appeared, he travels into Christopher Robin’s world taking him back on an adventure. They rid him of his evils (AKA his briefcase). That is very symbolic as it represents the technology in our world has consumed our lives.

Winnie the Pooh, Eeyore, Tigger, and Piglet saved the film from its slow pace in the real world. The film was slow in some parts which may have been the point. Everyone has to grow up and we tend to get piled up in reality. McGregor’s genuine performance playing around in the hundred-acre woods brought audiences out from the slow-paced real world.

There are many funny one-liners, mostly delivered by Pooh or Eeyore. My most favorite scene had to be when Pooh was inadvertently destroying Christopher Robin’s house and getting honey all over himself and even the carpets! You don’t want Winnie the Pooh in your house after watching this film.

The film is mainly about Winnie the Pooh and Christopher Robin’s friendship. We don’t see enough of the other fellow woods characters. In my opinion, there was not enough Tigger! The lovable tiger who bounces on his tale. Yes, we get his famous trademark song. But, Tigger’s fur is so faded that it doesn’t even look like him.

Christopher Robin does a fantastic job selling its beautiful visual effects and laugh aloud comedy, but in my opinion, I feel that the story was a bit underdeveloped. It’s still an enjoyable film to sit through, except the plot-line was too similar and viewers are just waiting for the next scene where the beloved silly gang will entertain us.

Arguably that is the point. As a graduate from college now making a life of my own as an adult, I could relate to Christopher Robin. We need to make time for our families and what makes us happy. Nobody can ignore their childhood. It’s a memorable time that we spent in our imaginations

Grab some honey and watch Christopher Robin with your favorite friends. It is a visually beautiful film which deserves the best visual effects nomination in the Academy Awards this year. It will also give you a needed laugh from Winnie the Pooh himself.
