Take a look at The Last of Us, Vikings: Valhalla, and The Traitors

Despite all the sorrow and doom that January brings, the 2023 version of the supposedly worst month of the year has been nothing short of remarkable in terms of the availability of new films and TV episodes to watch.

The Menu and The Pale Blue Eye, two popular feature films, debuted last weekend. But some of the most eagerly awaited new shows of 2023 will premiere this weekend, with HBO‘s The Last of Us and Netflix‘s Vikings: Valhalla season 2 taking center stage.

Seven of the most popular new films and TV programs that will be available to stream over the coming few days on Netflix, Prime Video, HBO Max, and other platforms are listed below. Get familiar with these excellent choices right now.

The Last of Us (HBO Max)

What more can we possibly add to what you already know about The Last of Us? The video game adaption is already one of the most well-known programs of 2023 thanks to the extensive marketing effort for the new HBO series.

For those who are still unaware, The Last of Us tells the tale of Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey), an unlikely pair who try to cross a post-apocalyptic United Stars following a fungal outbreak that transforms the majority of the world’s population into savage, man-eating creatures known simply as “the infected.” The creators of the tentpole series are Chernobyl creator Craig Mazin and the game’s original writer Neil Druckmann. They discussed how the transition to television in an interview with us.

The Last of Us will undoubtedly appear on our list of the top HBO series because we praised it in our review as being “heartfelt and brutal.” The first episode of the series premieres on January 15 on HBO Max in the US and on January 16 (overnight) on Sky Atlantic and NOW in the UK. Unexpectedly, Prime Video will also be accessible in France.

Available to watch starting on Sunday on HBO Max in the US, and starting on Monday on Sky Atlantic and NOW in the UK.

Season 2 of Vikings Valhalla (Netflix)

When it premiered in February 2022, Vikings: Valhalla surprised viewers by becoming a hugely successful spin-off of Prime Video’s Vikings series. The highly anticipated second season of the program has already debuted on Netflix to continue its international plot.

After the devastating fight at Kattegat, Leif (Sam Corlett), Freyds (Frida Gustavsson), and Harald (Leo Suter) are on the run when the historical drama’s second season begins, one month after the season one conclusion. The trio must split up after turning against the government, recreating themselves along the way, but their own legendary histories call.

Vikings: Valhalla will probably remain on our list of the top Netflix shows because of Jeb Stuart, the show’s creator, who stated in an interview that he “didn’t want to duplicate the same thing” with the show’s sequel.

Netflix is now streaming it.

Season 2 of Hunters (Prime Video)

This weekend marks the start of Hunters’ second (and last) season on Prime Video, which stars Al Pacino.

This eight-episode sequel sees Jonah (Logan Lerman) coming to terms with the possibility that Adolf Hitler himself could still be alive. It is set two years after a disastrous mission that dispersed the titular Nazi-hunters around the globe.

The first season of Hunters was poorly regarded by critics, but the second season’s “bonkers” and “absurd” episodes could push their way onto our list of the top Prime Video series.

Netflix is now streaming it.

Streaming on BBC iPlayer: The Traitors (Peacock)

The Traitors, a reality series that debuted in the UK in November 2022 and became an unexpected success there, is now accessible to stream in its entirety in the US on Peacock and BBC iPlayer.

The Traitors, a game show featuring 20 celebrities competing to win cash prizes, is hosted by Alan Cumming (rather than Claudia Winkleman) and is shot in the same location as its UK version. The problem? Three of the competitors, known as “the traitors,” will come up with a scheme to take the reward from the other competitors.

This game show in the vein of Among Us is a remake of the Dutch television series De Verraders, so start watching as soon as possible.

Now accessible for streaming on BBC iPlayer in the UK and Peacock in the US.

Velma (HBO Max)

Who anticipated this one, I wonder? The next adult animated comedy series on HBO Max, created by Charlie Grandy (The Mindy Project, The Office), explores the high school setting of Velma Dinkley’s life as A Scooby-Doo Mystery Inc. employee who goes unnoticed and unappreciated.

One of the finest HBO Max series, which has been called a “spunky re-imagining” of the Scooby-Doo universe, has voices from Mindy Kaling, Glenn Howerton, Sam Richardson, Constance Wu, Wanda Sykes, and others. The first two episodes of Velma are now online, and the remaining eight will be released in pairs every Thursday until February 9.

HBO Max is now streaming this material.

Season 2 of Mayor of Kingstown (Paramount Plus)

On Sunday, the drama series Mayor of Kingstown, starring Jeremy Renner (and not to be confused with HBO’s Mare of Easttown), premieres its second season on Paramount Plus.

The McLusky family is followed on Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan’s program as they navigate the ins and outs of America’s criminal justice system, while Mike the Mayor of Kingstown is dealing with the consequences of a terrible prison riot in season 2.

We can only hope that Mayor of Kingstown’s second season maintains the high standards set by its first season, which already rates as one of the greatest Paramount Plus series. Every Friday, new episodes will be made accessible to stream.

Available starting on Sunday for streaming on Paramount Plus.

Watch Break Point on Netflix

The first half of a new tennis-focused production called Break Point debuts on Netflix this weekend, while the second half of the hugely successful sports docuseries F1: Drive to Survive returns to the streaming service next month.

With commentary from players like Nick Kyrgios, Taylor Fritz, and Ons Jabeur, this fly-on-the-wall series from the same creators as Drive to Survive offers fans a unique look into the highs and lows of the tennis world.

Netflix will be hoping that its newest court drama, which has been lauded by critics as “riveting virtually from the first point,” can revive a sport whose top players are on the verge of retirement. This one will probably be shortly on our list of the top Netflix documentaries.
