So we started with the beginning of the MCU with Iron Man, so I am here with more comic book recommendations based on your favorite MCU movie or character. Next we are going to do Captain America. Now we are going to do Captain America as a whole, not just Steve Rogers so your Sam Wilson recommendations will be in here as well.

Let's start with the first Captain America movie. Now the origins are relatively the same in the comics, the major difference you are going to notice is that Bucky the war buddy and the guy Steve grew up with and loved like a brother are two different people. So once again you will see how the MCU takes aspects of different storylines and characters and kind of fuses them together.

Captain America #1 (1941) - The very first appearance of Captain America, again you will see some changes, but if you continue with issues from the first you will see his shield appear in the 2nd issue and how Steve becomes Captain America is very close.

The Avengers #4 (1964) - Steve gets unfrozen and joins the Avengers.

Moving on to Captain America and the Winter Soldier. Now the comics are more Bucky focused as opposed to the movie that made Bucky kind of Captain America’s sidekick. Now they have a good relationship in the MCU, I don’t have a problem with the changes but in the comics Bucky is much more of his own character, with his own agency and own storylines. So the comics will feel very different then the films.

Captain America #6 (2004)

Winter Soldier - Just all of them, he has his own series and it's really great. We also get a lot more from his character.

For Captain America Civil War we first have to acknowledge that the comics and the movie are different but the same. There were a lot more characters involved in the comics so I think they are a great gateway comic if you want to get into comics. Now these comics are also very controversial among people that regularly read comics. Iron Man stans claim that he was portrayed very out of character, those people are blatantly incorrect. There are some character inconsistencies but overall it's a story that changes the Marvel universe in a way that we are still feeling the effects of.

Now let's move to Falcon and the Winter Soldier. These are all going to be Sam centric stories, or at least Sam relevant stories.

Captain America #117 in 1969 is his first appearance. And of course starts similarly to the films, he’s kind of Captain America’s sidekick but he does get a lot of spotlight time.

In Captain America Volume 5 (2005-2009) Sam becomes a more permanent fixture in the Captain America universe. He also plays a major role in issue #600.

And of course one should read the Falcon and the Winter Soldier comics, they get their own series. And honestly it's a really great opportunity to flesh out both characters. Two Captain America sidekicks get the spotlight and as they take front and center they escape the shadow of Captain America, a title that they’ve both held at this point in comic book lore.

There are a ton of Captain America comics to choose from, and quite honestly you could start anywhere. There are Steve Captain America comics, Bucky as Captain America comics, and Sam Captain America comics and they all hold the title in their own ways and I love how different writers explore their characters. But if you want to use their on screen portrayals as a jumping off point then here you go!
