Missions by no rules... Second Sight comics introduces you to C.H.E.S.S. When hard decisions need to be made Avery Davis makes them. By putting together a under the radar Strike Team to take on missions that need a personal touch. Avery sends the C.H.E.S.S. Team to investigate business man Nakadi after hearing about his crooked actions from a inside source.

If you’ve been paying attention than you’ll remember the Blowtorch review I did not too long ago, well this is the team he belongs to. One of the things that is a big draw for me here is that they aren’t heroes in the traditional sense of the word, I mean sure they are a covert ops force but they’ve got uniforms and enhanced weaponry. So in a lot of way it reminds me of Checkmate and since no one else is publishing a book like this it’s got its own little corner of the market all to itself.

I like how this is being told. The story & plot development that we see through how the sequence of events unfold as well as how the reader learns information is presented extremely well. This is the type of book where a mission briefing does wonders in setting up what the story is going to be about while also ensuring us that nothing will go to plan. Already we the potential for something disastrous as an outsider is brought in and while Avery trusts him, no one should be trusted that much, I do hope that this is a bit of foreshadowing. The character development is interesting and when it comes to a team book it’s best to focus on a couple of them and pepper in the others so that we’re left with the desire to want to know and see more of the characters which is what we see happening here. The pacing is superb and as it takes us through the pages revealing the story we get a great look at what this could be all about.

With how this is being structured and how the layers within the story are seen, its nice that some play through the teams past while others are centric to this story, it sets the stage rather quite nicely. How everything works together to create the story’s ebb & flow as it also moves the story forward is also well executed.

The interiors here are pretty solid. Though someone might wanna watch the linework because I can’t tell if the blonde on the first page has scars or if that’s just facial lines. Just work on consistency because I see that might be an issue but with experience comes getting the hang of it and like I said the work is pretty solid. There also needs to be more backgrounds being utilised they not only enhance the moments but help with the depth perception, sense of scale and the overall sense of size and scope to the book. The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels show a talented eye for storytelling. The colour work we see in incredible. I like how we see the various hues and tones within the colours being utilised to create the shading, highlights and shadow work.

Great concept, great team and off to a superb start I am looking forward to seeing a clandestine off the books kind of group where brains & brawn are all they need. Sure the villains we see making an introduction are going to light up next issue but they seem more like augmented through science kind of villains and in all honesty this, this is what has me excited once again. Untraditional to say the least and yet this is how it all got started for folks like Fury and Flagg so bring it on i’m stoked for what’s next!
