Broken Souls Ballad #4

Black Caravan/Scout Comics 2021

Written by Massimo Rosi

Illustrated by Ludovica Ceregatti

The threads of fate, slowly and surely begin to cross the paths of all blood brothers. Their own absurd and terrifying powers, trying to bring them closer and together. Even those who most of all suffer imprisonment and pain. Soon the children of the same mother will all be together to escape their brutal fate of exploitation.

What an exceptionally odd little book this is. I kind of get it and the more we see the more it is easy to understand but that doesn’t mean there aren’t curveballs galore. I mean the things these kids can do is creepy as all get out and there has to be a larger picture as to why, we just aren’t privy to them right now. Instead we’re technically in a recovery stage now that the kids' abilities have manifested themselves and that’s okay for now. It just shows us that there is so much story left to be told and this is exciting in and of itself. Now the intrigue factor has been raised to new heights thanks to the actions we see taken here. We just become so embroiled in what is occurring here and the interest, engagement and entertainment factors are all off the charts.

I’m a huge fan of the way that this is being told. The story & plot development that we see through how the sequence of events unfold as well as how the reader learns information is impeccably rendered. The character development that we see through the narration, the dialogue, the character interaction as well as how we see them act and react to the situations and circumstances which they encounter keeping their ever evolving personalities at the forefront. The pacing is excellent and as it takes us through the pages revealing more of the story the more involved and invested we become.

I’m greatly appreciative of how we see this being structured and how we see the layers within the story continue to emerge, grow, evolve and strengthen. The layers here open up new avenues to be explored and these avenues focus on the kids and this manages to add such depth, dimension and complexity to the story. Lucille really epitomises how the avenues open up in this manner and leave us wanting. How we see everything working together to create the story’s ebb & flow as well as how it moves the story forward is perfectly achieved.

The creativity and imagination that we see throughout is horrifyingly brilliant and it really does give one the heebie jeebies. I’m loving the entire vibe that the book gives off and this has a lot to do with how we see the linework and it’s varying weights and techniques being utilised to create this crazy interesting attention to detail. I do wish we’d see more backgrounds utilised it’s the only thing this book is really missing. How we see the composition within the panels brings out the depth perception, sense of scale and the overall sense of size and scope of the story. The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels show an extremely talented eye for storytelling. The various hues and tones within the story being utilsied to create the shading, highlights and shadow work shows a solid understanding of how colour works.

I think Massimo is one of today’s more brilliant and unpredictable in the best of ways. You cannot pigeon hole the genre here as it’s all over the place and this kind of almost controlled chaos isn’t easy to pull off like it's being done here. The writing here is utterly spectacular and the characterisation is phenomenal while the interiors bring us the creepy at full force.
