A set of books which help preserve the memories of NHS superheroes during the Coronavirus pandemic has been launched.

The profits and fund raising in excess of the book production will go to selected charities of our NHS Superhero families***

UK citizens have been amazed and have so much gratitude for all the doctors and nurses who have risked their lives in order to treat them in hospital and ensure that they stay fit and healthy.

UK Secretary Of State For Health, Matt Hancock during his speeches made the comment that we are trying to identify an appropriate way to remember and celebrate these individuals.  This really struck a cord to me, as personally, that is what my work at Tailored Yarn is all about (see below).  I feel that creating a book in honour of NHS superheroes’ heroics, bravery and service is a great way to ‘celebrate their lives’ and a project that the people of the UK could all contribute to in order to show their appreciation.

The aim of creating these books is to ‘Preserve Memories’ by capturing the NHS SuperHeroes names, the depth of their heroics, the voices of the people they saved, and their NHS story in order to celebrate their lives, remember their heroics and use their names to inspire the children of the future.

The books have been produced in order to create a non-fiction feature to capture real life stories and a fictional book to inspire the young (5-10 year old children), with both books celebrating the life of our NHS superheroes.

The non-fiction book will capture the motivations and ambitions of these superheroes, the personal perspectives from family and staff, and also the patients who they saved.  It’s a perfect way for the people of the UK to feel proud and take a moment to truly understand, appreciate and show their respect to these individuals and their journeys.  Every affected family and hospital across the UK will be offered a printed copy of this book (subject to funding) as a poignant memory to share and remember these heroes.

This is a not for profit project; all services incurred to create the books will be on an ‘at cost’ basis

Other potential options

- If public are generous and believe in this; we may consider selling the printed book to raise money for the NHS

Cost / Spend Breakdown

The cost of this project at £50k covers the creation of both these books.  The aim is to get all parties / services to agree an ‘at cost’ basis for services, so as to ensure maximisation of profits.  Where it is possible to procure services using ‘goodwill’ given the cause this will also be explored before spending money.

Vision of Tailored Yarn

The author Gillian Seale, has the curious title of being a known as a story tailor, who designs illustrations, not clothes and stitches together words and ideas, not pieces of material, to create a tapestry of memories through my stories. The idea is similar to memory boxes, but in the unique form of a fictional literature legacy. She had the vision to set up Tailored Yarn, for the purpose of preserving memories while bringing comfort and healing to children who have suffered the loss of a loved one.

“By putting herself in the shoes of parents who have received a terminal diagnosis, she considered what she would most want to leave to my own young children, who absolutely love reading books. While doing this, my vision became crystal clear and the idea of Tailored Yarn weaving personal stories was born.” — Gillian Seale

This business is still in its infancy with its first book only just being released. A book called Postpixie Missing in Action which was inspired by a close friend of mine who was diagnosed with muscular dystrophy at the age of eleven. The main character shares similar values, skills and interests with my friend who was a dietitian and who has always enjoyed baking. It was her suggestion that this book should be about empathy, confidence and perseverance as well as how much we should all support and depend on one another, in a world teaching us to strive for our independence. It's just been published on Amazon but is also available through my website where some of the profits support the charity Muscular Dystrophy UK.
