Black Dog Theatre's "Ordinary Days" Made Hearts Glow

It was a marvelous show.

People walk into our lives for a reason.

Black Dog Theatre performed “Ordinary Days,” a musical about four New Yorkers navigating life, love, and figuring out their next steps. The four each have their own struggles and ambitions, but their paths crossing changes things for the better.

“Ordinary Days” was a heartwarming show. By the end of the show, everyone in the audience was glowing like never before. This is the show we need right now during these difficult and stressful times. Black Dog Theatre’s production is a reminder that even in the midst of uncertainty, we can find connection, discover our paths, and learn something new.

The show follows four characters: Deb, Warren, Claire, and Jason, played magnificently by Tomiko Nicholson, Casey Williamson, Kaitlin Eggers, and Nate Abell. The cast brought humor, sincerity, and genuine emotions to their roles. Most importantly, they felt real.

Nicholson had sharp comedic timing and fast musical skills as Deb, who rushes to finish (or find excuses) for her thesis.

Williamson plays Warren, a quirky and imaginative artist. No matter the situation, Warren always sees the bright side. Williamson made audiences laugh with his comical deliveries.

Deb and Warren make an unexpected connection. Nicholson and Williamson had funny interactions. Deb and Warren learn to slow down or see a different picture in their interactions.

Claire and Jason are trying to figure out their relationship. Jason wants to build a future together, but he is still uncertain about his future. Claire is also uncertain about the relationship because of past mistakes. Together, the couple must learn to communicate their feelings to make the relationship work.

Abell brought vulnerability to his role, particularly in his song, ‘Favorite Places.’ Eggers also brought emotional depth to Claire. Her song, “I’ll Be Here,” was a powerful song about love and loss.

Adam Gwon wrote the music and lyrics for “Ordinary Days.” The score gives each character an opportunity to express thoughts they’re afraid to say. Musical numbers are central to telling these stories. Songs included “One by One by One,’ ‘I’ll Be Here,’ and “Big Picture,’ my favorite.

Jenn Cardarelli excelled in her directorial debut. She worked closely with the cast to make this story and relationships feel genuine. Her direction brings the characters separate storylines together into an engaging theatrical experience.

Cardarelli went the extra mile and created graphics of New York City life. I felt like I was in the hustling big city. The show took place in the North Andover Historical Society auditorium. I had never been in this space before, and it accommodated this show well. Every space was used, including the balconies.

“Choosing an intimate theater was important to me because ‘Ordinary Days’ is a story about connection - between characters, between strangers, and between the people onstage and those watching them,” said Cardarelli.

My favorite moment of all was when colorful paper with positive notes was sprinkled onto the audience. I have always believed that kind words are the best gift.

“Ordinary Days” is a heartfelt story with several incredible messages that we need to hear right now. We’re all trying to figure out our lives no matter the age. Life doesn’t come with a manual. We’re all improvising what to do next. Friendships and new connections make everything a little better because nobody ever walks through life alone.

I wish the show didn’t have to conclude. I could spend a whole week watching “Ordinary Days” to experience its warm and positive themes. Black Dog Theatre’s “Ordinary Days” was a marvelous show. Well done to the cast and crew for spreading hope, love, and cheer.
