Bizarro? White Martians? Supergirl's Adventure Has Only Just Begun!

If you've been watching Supergirl at a nearly religious pace, as I have, you're probably starting to get excited about all the possibilities that are beginning to unfold as Kara Danvers continues to step out of her cousin's shadow (Superman), and make a name for herself as the hero of National City.

Supergirl started off a tad slow for some fans, but has been picking up steam as we move into the halfway point of this season and has been getting great reviews – enough so that CBS ordered a full season. We’ve already seen some great one-off characters so far in Livewire, Red Tornado and Jemm, and we’ve been given an introduction to one of DC’s most underrated heroes, J'onn J'onzz a.k.a. Martian Manhunter, as a supporting character who we will most likely get to learn more about as the season and series progresses.

So with the introduction of these characters, it leaves us wondering: who else will pop up in National City?

More female characters?

During a roundtable for Supergirl, executive producer Ali Adler was asked if there were plans to bring in more female characters, both human and super-powered, and Adler confirmed:

“These are all very good questions. Yes.”

Adler also continued on to specify that Kara would cross paths with female characters other than Cat Grant and Alex Danvers:

“We’re actually doing that now in our backorder from CBS, so we’re actually working on that right now. Absolutely. There might be a little twist to that too.” [source]

We’re set to see more female characters, and we know that both Cameron Chase (Emma Caulfield) and Silver Banshee (Italia Ricci) will appear when the show returns in 2016. Both characters have a history in the comics –Cameron as a DEO Agent and Banshee as a frienemy of Supergirl.

Seeing as the show is Supergirl-centric and focuses on how she faces the struggles of being a female superhero in a male-dominated world, we will more than likely meet more female characters as human supporting roles as well as super-powered villains. It’s unlikely that we will meet another outright female hero like Power Girl or Bumblebee, although nothing is out of the question as the show’s success has warranted a little extra leeway.

New Villains?

Supergirl has been adding great villains in each episode, slowly revealing Kara's true potential as a hero, and that trend isn't going to end anytime soon. So far we've come across several great villains in: Vartox, Livewire, Non, Jemm and Red Tornado – all of which have tested Kara and pushed her to become an even greater hero. We know that after the winter break, when Supergirl returns in 2016, Silver Banshee will appear (although it's uncertain how 'villainous' she will be). We also know that The Toyman will make an appearance as well. It makes us wonder who else is bound for an appearance, and thanks to the Fatman on Batman podcast we have an answer.

During this interview with Kevin Smith, Executive Producer Andrew Kriesberg reveals very casually that another of Superman's rogues is set to appear in National City: Bizarro.

Whether he is created through a scientific experiment gone wrong, or an alien from another planet, Bizarro is a solid adversary for Kara to overcome, seeing as he has near identical powers (like super strength and flight), but has inverted powers like freeze vision instead of heat vision. More often than not, Bizarro tends to be a misunderstood character, so it could be interesting to see Kara try to reason with Bizarro and use her humanity to try to reach the goodness inside.

It's also worth remembering that in the comics – Pre-New 52 – they introduced Bizarro-Girl, who faced off against Supergirl because of fear rather than hatred. So if the show takes Bizarro in the direction of being a scientifically created being (thanks to Maxwell Lord), we could see a female Bizarro pop up – perhaps putting Melissa Benoist on double duty portraying both sides.

More Aliens?

We’ve already seen a collection of alien races through the first half of the season and with the inclusion of J’onn J’onzz, the Supergirl story is opening up the possibilities for a variety of alien races to appear on Supergirl: both peace-loving and not so much. One alien race in particular that is going to show up is a primary villain opposing J’onn J’onzz – The White Martians.

With the introduction of J’onzz into the story as the secret that Hank Henshaw was hiding, the White Martians can’t be too far behind. A concept that was proven to be accurate during an interview with TV Line and David Harewood (Henshaw/J’onzz), where he explained that in Episode 11, we will meet a White Martian:

“In Episode 11 we have a visitor from another planet who’s a White Martian. There are two Martian species – it feels really weird talking about this (laughs) I’ve not been able to say anything about it – there is a Green Martian species and a White Martian species – and the White Martians, in our story, are responsible for the death of the whole of the Green Martians. It was a fire and they burned them and we get to see a lot of that.” [source]

Regardless of who else shows up on Supergirl, I hope that we get to see these three ideas expanded on in the show.
