In my childhood I enjoyed Hannah Montana because she got to live two different lives. As Miley she could be treated like any high school girl and as Hannah as an adored celebrity. People either encouraged my enjoyment of the show or made negative commentary like, "Everyone would know they are the same person, you would have to be dumb to not." I think about this and wonder... The word isn't dumb, more like influenced by society to believe a certain way. I already knew people with different status are approached and spoken to differently. People will go with what they have been told about someone and how that may affect interacting with them.
I have found this out more in depth by experiencing a situation where people talked about me in a way completely opposite of my true character. People were socially influenced to believe information about me that in my opinion is way off and ridiculous. People who went with this version started automatically tiptoeing around me or taking my regular comments as negative. They would be rude to me without much of a given reason and start screaming at me that I am a brat and idiot, then feel justified, If people were so easily led to believe to approach me in a negative manner while I was just up to every day activities like buying coffee, walking though the park, and posting fun videos and writing on the Internet then yes I do believe a situation like this could actually exist.
A mobster and a politician can be two people with just as evil of motivations, but one is seen and approached well while the other may be hated. The person could act and be the exact same person, but their different name plates create people to interact with them in completely different ways. This leads to the person they get to know too. During the time I was being targeted, people automatically approached me with aggression, which of course led me to be uncomfortable or panicked and aggravated. This is the type of interaction created that could have become completely different if I was spoken to positively I could have stayed in a better mood. With a wig on and a different outfit, the same man could both be a hated mob leader and a loved politician.
That covered the same personality, but I have thought about somebody who may be great at deception or role switching. A woman could be a pirate on the seas and then go back to a Victorian household donning a fancy wig, salt washed off, and make up on while adding a completely different way of speaking or demeanor. They could find a way to be these two roles without being found out especially if absences make sense for their lives. A pirate travels anyways and a Victorian woman may be one of the only around the town that has enough money or reason to travel.
Marilyn Monroe did this a bit herself. When she walked around as Norma Jean she stayed within a normal personality. When Marilyn she would put on a specific glamour persona everyone would come to recognize. Many skipped past her as Norma Jean and didn't realize because she wasn't using her Marilyn exact voice and style. Someone could have accidentally treated her horrible without knowing because she seemed like any other cute lady in the town. It is interesting what people miss every day when not paying enough attention. Maybe a stalker could figure out this secret but most people would probably actually have no clue and would end up feeling the "dumb" they scoffed at.
