With Pokémon now being one of the biggest franchises of all time, spanning years of classic games, cards and toys. The franchise has brought joy to millions over the years. Without a doubt, the most famous are the games. With vintage stuff like cassettes and the 90’s being back in fashion again, there’s a lot of interest in the old Pokémon stuff with some it fetching as much as thousands of pounds. In the Pokémon community, Red and Blue are games still talked about a lot. Through exploited glitches, detailed playthroughs and modern-day lore, I feel safe in telling you that you can beat Pokémon Red and Blue with any Pokémon you want. It’s linear storyline means you have lots of choices, even with the first 151 Pokémon.

The first generation of games are also quite broken. Pyschic is without a doubt the strongest type at the time. The type system was designed to balance things out, but the psychic types were the clear winners here. Bug, dragon and ghosts had no moves at the time that they could utilise to their benefit. If you look at each Pokémon’s stats, you can see they’re not all equal. Now some of these Pokémon have gone on to have new forms, become legendary memes and mascots, whilst others have faded into the depths of obscurity.

What makes the games irresistible and have the high replay value is that you can act out your play though ideas and see how they work. Even if your favourite Pokémon in this game dosen’t have amazing stats or a great move pool, you can still take advantage of the tools availible.

Take advantage of the crazy artificial intelligence

People do say that these games are some of the easiest games in the series, but I think it depends on what kind of team you have. The first generation of Pokémon games had some weird AI. Critical hits depended on speed, special attack and special defence was one stat. Sometimes you just need to spam one powerful move just to win the battle. And the 1HKO moves have such a low chance of touching you, it’s pointless using them.

Exploiting the glitches

Thanks to JRose11’s valiant efforts, we know it is know impossible to do a legit solo run with Magikarp due to only having two weak attacks that do nothing on ghosts, including struggle. Whilst there are some glitches that can damage and even destroy your data, some glitches are perfect. If you know what you are doing, you could complete the entire pokedex through exploiting the Mew glitch.

Saving rare candies and vitamins

If you ever find a rare candy, I think it’s best to keep them until you’re further along in the game when it’s harder to level up. Vitamins and X battle items are expensive, so it’s worth saving some money buy looking for free ones if you get a chance. It’s worth storing them in you PC as there is limited space in your bag. This is why I like having Chaney on my team, so I can use the move Softboiled to heal my team.

Giving your Pokémon coverage moves

Giving your Pokémon coverage moves will make a bif difference in your Pokémon. Normal type pokemon like Snorlax and Chansey are perfect for this. A lot of water pokemon know ice moves. Bug, grass and poison Pokémon can also learn some of each other’s moves. There’s a lot of limits in this gen. Many Pokémon here have some poor stats and shallow move pools. You can look up their moves on sites like Smogon and Serebii to give you some ideas.

Skill mixing

Giving your Pokémon coverage moves can also help with skill mixing. Creating a balanced team that cancels out each other’s weaknesses whist supporting their strengths is the key to creating a great Pokémon team. This is why the three Kanto starters work well together. They all play different roles and they peform them quite well in this gen.

Trading to other games for evolutions and other moves if needed can help too, but this might not be possible if you only have a physical copy without a cable or another 3DS with the games on it.

Knowing your Pokémon

If you know you Pokémo’s greatest strengths, you can use it to your best advantage. One of my favourites is Vileplume with her signiture move, Petal Dance. A she is a poison type as well, she also gets STAB on sludge bomb.
