Batman The Adventures Continue Season Two #3

DC Comics 2021

Written by Alan Burnett & Paul Dini

Illustrated by Rick Burchett

Coloured by Monica Kubina

Lettered by Josh Reed

Batgirl sets off on the warpath after she learns Jimmy “The Jazzman” Peake is free and back out on the streets. She’ll do anything to capture him again especially after what Jazzman did to her father, even if it means disobeying Batman. But can she capture the criminal before he’s taken by another mysterious vigilante hitting the scene?

I will say this right off the bat, I DO NOT like this version of the Huntress. It was bad enough that she was changed so completely from her Justice Society image and even worse when killing someone meant nothing to her. It just rankles my chain to see this version of her. I do like the fact that Batgirl needs help in a fight and the two do fight side by side. It was one of the more exciting moments in the book. What I absolutely adore about this issue is the spotlight on Batgirl and how she goes about doing her thing. Batgirl is one of my favourite heroines and to see her get this kind of spotlight and to see how her interaction with Batman goes well, it made me smile.

I love the way that this is being told. The story & plot development we see through how the sequence of events unfold as well as how the reader learns information is presented exceptionally well. The character development we see through the dialogue, the character interaction as well as how they act and react to the situations and circumstances which they encounter continues to flesh these characters out magnificently. The pacing is superb and as it takes us through the pages revealing the story through action and words really pulls us into the story incredibly well.

I greatly appreciate the way that we see this being structured and how the layers within the story begin to emerge, grow and evolve. I love seeing the avenues we see explored and how adamant Batgirl is to be a part of this case. What we see in these avenues adds depth, dimension and complexity to the story. It really is complex and the Huntresses role in all this is clearly stated and that’s interesting to me as well. How all this works together to create the story’s ebb & flow as well as how it moves the story forward is achieved exceptionally well.

The interiors here are absolutely perfectly rendered. What we see looks like they are taken from the cartoon series. That we see backgrounds makes me extremely happy as they enhance and expand the moments as well as work within the composition of the panels to bring out the depth perception, sense of scale and the overall sense of size and scope to the story. The linework is phenomenal and it’s what makes this look like the cartoon series. The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels show a remarkably talented eye for storytelling. I am so over the moon impressed with the work we are seeing on these pages. The colour work is perfectly rendered. The various hues and tones within the colours being utilised to create the shading, highlights and shadow work shows such a great understanding of how colour works.

This is one of those stories that will stick with you and mainly because it’s focus is on Batgirl and The Huntress. Also for other reasons, those I will not mention because you need to read the story for yourself. The writing here is phenomenal and the characterisation is superb and to have it all wrapped up in these perfect interiors make this the second best book DC puts out, sorry The Batman Scooby-Doo Mysteries takes the number one spot but you’ll notice the similarities.
