Thanks to some magical help from Zatanna, Batman can now see Deadman. Joining forces, the Dark Knight and the death-defying specter hatch a plan to apprehend the treacherous Talon. But the mysterious assassin gets the upper hand and captures Hamilton Hill Jr.! Can Batman and Deadman track the regeneration formula components and find the sinister Court of Owls' secret passageways, or will Gotham finally fall under the Court's full control?!

This book contains the best of both worlds it blends the animated series and the comics absolutely perfectly. I the show were still running, and god help I wish it was, this would have been a logical arc that would’ve ended with a sneering laugh or something letting the audience know that they’ve fooled the Bat into thinking he’s taken them down and they can go back to working in secret. That’s just me thinking aloud about what I’d love to have seen. This however is one heck of a great story and while Batman may not technically be all ages this is definitely thirteen and up thanks to subtle nuances alone that had me cracking up.

I love the way that this is being told. The story & plot development that we see through how the sequence of events unfold as well as how the reader learns information is presented exquisitely. The character development we see through the dialogue, the character interaction as well as how they act and react to the situations and circumstances they encounter are magnificently rendered. The pacing is superb and as it takes us through the pages revealing more of the story we’re pulled into this beautifully.

How we see this being structured and how the layers within the story continue to grow, evolve and emerge anew is extremely well thought out. The avenues we see and the ones that are freshly opened up that have the twists along with the stellar characterisation and the humour which delightful are fantastic. Whether those work with the main arc or swirl around it they add depth and complexity to the story beautifully. How we see everything working together to create the story’s ebb & flow as well as how it moves the story forward is achieved exceptionally well.

The interiors here are perfectly rendered so much so that it feels like animation cells from the show that’s no easy feat. The linework is great and how we see the varying weights being utilised to create this detail work that we see is utterly marvellous. That backgrounds are utilised as much as they are makes me a happy camper and then how they are utilised within the composition of the panels to bring out the depth perception, sense of scale and the overall sense of size and scope to the story is superb. The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels show a remarkably talented eye for storytelling. I think the colour is exceptional here as well. How the various hues and tones within the colours are utilised to create the shading, highlights and shadow work is fabulously rendered.

I think it takes skill and talent to really write a book for multiple age ranges and making some moments so subtle so that adults get it and laugh and kids will just enjoy the overall feeling of a cartoon. I feel like for a younger audience this is a gateway into mainstream titles that might be a little more advanced but if they understand what they are reading all the more power to em and let’s get em into the big leagues. Well actually I kind of consider this in the big leagues and it’s much more entertaining than original Court of Owls introduction. This is intelligently written and smartly illustrated book that is perfect for kids young and old.
