Barry Season 3 Episode 4 'All the Sauces' Review

Ending on a climactic note, the writing for this season deserves immense applause

I’m having an issue with this app but I have to keep it a secret.

Several events take place in All the Sauces. Conspiring with Hank to place a bomb under Fernando’s house, Barry goes about his duties. While this is happening, Sally is feverishly preparing for the premiere of her show. As Gene is trying to skip town, Fuches is back in L.A. hatching evil plans against Barry.

You know an episode is good when you stay up half the night thinking about it. Seriously, I could not stop thinking about the climax of this episode. Barry has so many layers in its story. Ending on a climactic note, the writing for this season deserves immense applause for its close attention to everyone’s role.

The beginning of this episode is a trip back to season 1. Literally. Remember the very first scene in the first episode of the series? Now, you think about it a lot differently from what was going on before everything happened. And a significant character of a notable deceased character returns.

Fuches is out for his revenge. Though, I’d argue that Fuches has not thought out this plan thoroughly. Whether it is Fuches or a flaw on the writer's side, with all the hitman scams that Fuches has set Barry up with in the past, Fuches is responsible. He should be keeping himself under the radar.

Wow, Sarah Goldberg is incredible in this episode. Sally experiences her first premiere. Preparing her speech for the premiere, Sally is caught up in tons of emotions. It overwhelms her on the stage to the point where she is hyperventilating underneath a forced smile for what feels like a minute.

Sally is a mixed bag across the whole fanbase, and even she is aware of her faults. Goldberg is fantastic at cementing Sally’s emotions, like right when she shows up at the premiere. It’s her dream come true, followed by the fear of the world finding out who she really is.

As much as I have been enjoying Elsie Fisher, I can see why fans find her character unnecessary. Sally could have learned on her own about what was going on in her relationship. In the first season, she is capable of knowing the wrong fit for a relationship.

Just as I suspected from the last episode, the production company believes Gene’s explosive rant to be improv. Gene is feverishly running about running into an assortment of notable actors who start praising him for his work.

I read that when the show first started, Bill Hader has a hard time making improv when it was a serious scene. Hader instills physical comedy when necessary. Although it was funny, the whole demolition app scene felt like filler. This show is great in its use of comedy, using subtle touches.

My favorite moment of all from this episode was Barry taking a shell-shocked Cristobal back to Hank. It’s such a small moment, but it says so much about Barry’s character.

Alec Berg covers all the loose ends in this episode. Obviously, Barry is heading down a much darker path. The final scene of this episode was directed closely. It was also very well-acted between Goldberg and Hader.

Said scene is what kept me awake for most of the night. Barry and Sally’s relationship has never been a healthy one. It was only a matter of time before their break up happened but I can’t help but wonder how this whole situation is going to impact them.

It’s the middle of the season now. I cannot wait for more.
