At Comic-Con, Marvel Studios officially let the public in on what's coming up in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, revealing that the upcoming "Avengers" sequels —

"Avengers: Secret Wars" and "Avengers: The Kang Dynasty." The Marvel Cinematic Universe's protagonists are about to experience the next Thanos-calibre event, and it can't arrive fast enough.

With "Secret Wars," which will come before "The Kang Dynasty," that situation will change. But what exactly is "Secret Wars," and why is it deserving of being an Avengers film? Below are all of your questions answered.

Comic-Con 2022: Marvel Studios' Phase 6 First Movies Revealed

What Is “Secret Wars,” Exactly?

Marvel Comics' "Secret Wars" series, which ran from 1984 to 1985, marked the first ever corporate-wide crossover in the history of comics.

In the narrative, a cosmic being known as the Beyonder, who is attracted by the existence of superheroes on Earth, kidnaps Marvel's A-list heroes and teleports them to a man-made planet known as "the battleworld," where he commands them to engage in a deathmatch.

The straightforward premise signalled significant changes for the Marvel status quo at the time. Most notably, Spider-Man acquired his black costume on the Battleworld, which was, of course, the Venom symbiote. However, the story also led to The Hulk suffering injuries that brought back his uncontrollable rage-version, She-Hulk taking The Thing's place as a member of the Fantastic Four, and some inter-X-Men conflict.

What Does This Mean for the MCU?

Remember that most fans believed the MCU story would follow the comics and have Thanos falling in love with Death as soon as he appeared at the conclusion of "The Avengers." While that was taken into consideration, Marvel Studios adopted a different strategy, leading to the creation of "Infinity War" and "Endgame," which ended up being mostly original plots based on the Infinity Gauntlet comics run.

One explanation is that, rather than the Beyonder, we can reasonably expect Kang the Conqueror, played by Jonathan Majors, who made his MCU debut in "Loki, to teleport all the characters. Especially considering Kang is mentioned in "Avengers 4" Additionally, we can anticipate the "Avengers" sequel to be jam-packed with surprises.

Will the Russo Brothers Direct?

Joe and Anthony Russo, who directed two "Captain America" sequels as well as "Infinity War" and "Endgame," have long shown interest in eventually returning to Marvel to helm "Secret Wars." They have renewed their interest as recently as this month, but they have insisted that nothing is formal and that they are currently swamped with other projects.

What could happen in Avengers: Secret Wars?

Despite sharing the same title, there have been two significant Secret Wars storylines in the comic books, and they are both quite different.

The first Secret Wars began in 1984, when a cosmic being known as the Beyonder transported the most well-known Marvel heroes and villains to Battleworld and made them fight for his amusement.

The comic event, though economically successful, was criticised at the time for having a thin plot that looked to be intended to sell toys, but it is still a favourite among many fans who were growing up at the time.

A more positive critical response to a modern interpretation of Secret Wars that took place in 2015 was a catastrophic incursion between Earth-616 (the regular Marvel One) and the Ultimate Marvel Universe (the universe where Miles Morales was born).

Doctor Doom uses the power of the Beyonders to create a new Battleworld that combines every other reality in the Marvel Universe in an effort to stave off total devastation. He naturally instals himself as Emperor as well.

Most Marvel Universe heroes and villains don't question the bizarre new world they find themselves in because they have no memory of their life prior to Doom's new order.

Expect Avengers: Secret Wars to incorporate both fresh material and elements from the two storylines.
