'Avengers 4' Trailer: First Impressions

Part of the journey is the end.

Well, then.

At 1 PM GMT, December, 7 2018, the Avengers 4 trailer was unleashed upon the world. I'm writing this at 2:05 PM—and I'm yet to calm down. I've watched it several times, so I thought I'd get my first thoughts and impressions out there while I'm on this hype high.

While there is little in terms of spoiler material, there is a few interesting things to highlight and talk about. I'm not an Easter egg hunter, and I can barely watch this trailer without having a fit of excitement and needing to change myself.

Tony's preparing for the end.

Lost in Space [Marvel Studios]

At the start of the trailer, we find Tony Stark drifting alone in space, aboard the Milano, Peter Quill's ship.

He's trying to send one last message to Pepper Potts, to let her know he may not be coming back. No food for four days and half a day's oxygen left, it's not looking good for the Earth's best defender.

He's still got a quip in him, but here, Tony looks and sounds completely and utterly defeated. He's merely waiting to be either rescued or just die. Based off his attitude in the past couple of Avengers movies, Stark may low-key believe his death is deserved/overdue.

The universe is reeling from the Snap.

Chills [Marvel Studios]

I just wanted to lob this gif in because it gave me goosebumps. Seeing the Marvel logo disintegrate like the majority of our favourite MCU characters sets the darker tone well. It's believed that the film takes place about six months after the conclusion of Infinity War.

Thanks for a companion comic, we now have an official name for the snap, "The Decimation."

It also states that the Avengers have kept the truth of the Decimation hidden from the rest of the world. Earth has no knowledge of Thanos, nor the Infinity Stones, they just know of an event saw half of their loved ones disappear before their eyes.

Thanos is resting... for now.

Thanos's Battle Armour [Marvel Studios]

The last time we saw the Mad Titan, he had taken refuge on an alien planet, almost looking like he's taken up a farmer's lifestyle. He's done what he set out to do, so there's no need to go anywhere anymore.

That is... for the time being. He's still wielding the Infinity Gauntlet, even if the Decimation appeared to fry it beyond repair. You don't see his face in this trailer, but the brief glimpse of him and the gauntlet suggests that he knows something is coming. He may have to don his armour once more.

The Avengers are on their own.

[Marvel Studios]

The Decimation may have left us with the original Avengers left, but not much else. This eerie still of Avengers HQ shows that not even the lights are on. Bruce, Natasha, and Steve appear to have holed up there alone, you could probably assume Rodey is there somewhere, too, though. We're likely to get some very serious character moments in Avengers 4, so I'm going to pack tissues in preparation this time.

Hawkeye returns! Sort of.

[Marvel Studios]

One pleasant surprise from this trailer was the return of Jeremy Renner's Clint Barton, AKA Hawkeye. However, comic nerds will infer from his new get-up that he's under a different moniker here, Ronin. Not to be confused with Ronan from Guardians of the Galaxy and Captain Marvel, which releases two months prior to Avengers 4. No one's getting them mixed up at all.

The circumstances of Black Widow finding him again look less than cheery. As you can see from the still above, Barton looks pissed. I can't wait for him to open the biggest can of whoop-ass on Thanos that's ever been opened.

Cap is at his breaking point.

[Marvel Studios]

One of the last shots of the trailer sees Captain America discussing a plan with Black Widow. She's certain it'll work, but he wearily responds:

"I don't know what I'll do if it doesn't."

Is Cap about to snap himself? Are we going to see him go all out to save the universe? He's cleaned himself up now (to many people's disappointment), so it remains to be seen whether he'll be the sneaky type from Infinity War or he may just have a Hulk-out of his own.

Finally, we have the title.

We're in the Endgame now. [Marvel Studios]

We were bamboozled, ladies and gentlemen. We DID hear the title in Infinity War. April 2019 sees the release of Avengers: Endgame. Nearly 11 years in the making, spanning what will be 22 films when it opens in theaters. In my review earlier this year, I stated Avengers: Infinity War was "one of the best superhero movies that will ever be made," let's see if Endgame can possibly top it.

While we weren't given much by way of story in the new trailer, we can be certain it will be one hell of a ride.
