Anthony Geary predicted his character's demise

"If I ever do leave GH - not something I want to see happen anytime soon - I want Luke to die. I don't want him coming home for Christmas episodes or the birth of his great grandchildren. I would prefer to have him go out in a blaze of glory and also that it be the climax of a wonderful story that involves the entire community, rather than some inconsequential B plot".

These were the words of General Hospital's Anthony Geary in 2013 during an interview with TV Guide. The actor made it clear that once he left the ABC soap he wanted his character to be done as well. Geary departed GH in 2017 and said he was not coming back. Fans may not know this but the actor had been living on two continents for over two decades.

General Hospital may have wanted Geary to return

In a 2015 interview with Paulo Presta, Geary shared that he had been traveling between the United States and Europe four times a year for 20 years. He makes it clear that his heart is in Amsterdam and that is where he is going to stay. After leaving General Hospital Geary was lured back for one scene that was less than 60 seconds. This was in 2017 Luke's wife Tracy Quartermaine (Jane Elliot) moved to Paris. Tracy opened the door of a cafe and found Luke sitting at a table and that is the last that was seen of Geary.

Elliot just returned to General Hospital for her third stint since retiring and she brought the news that Luke died in a fiery cable car accident. This was a horrendous death and GH fans are still dealing with the fact that Jason Morgan is presumed dead under a pile of rubble and baby Liam Michael Corbin did not survive. This third and most grizzly death is troubling fans of the ABC soap but it is exactly what Anthony Geary desired.

The actor wanted his alter-ego to go out in a blaze of glory and that he did. The cable car snapped and burst into flames upon hitting the ground and Luke was identified by his charred remains. Tracy recently brought the news to Port Charles and based on spoilers, Luke's ashes will probably be thrown into the sea from aboard the Haunted Star.

General Hospital fans are paying attention

A few weeks back Nicholas Chaves who plays Spencer Cassadine shared a picture on social media that had Tracy in the background on a boat with what looked to be an urn in her hands. Soap fans immediately began speculating that Luke had met his demise and his wife was going to spread his ashes from the ship he gave his daughter Lulu Spencer Falconeri (Emme Rylan). Chaves immediately removed the image he shared but it was too late because the cat was out of the bag and now viewers see it is all true.

It is not known why the powers that be decided to kill Luke off at this particular time but it could be related to his 2013 statement. While Jane Elliot has no problem reprising her role as Tracy she is doing exactly what Tony Geary said he did not desire to do. Perhaps the General Hospital execs reached out to Geary to see if they could get him to return during the holidays with his onscreen wife. When they could not lure him back they decided to give the soap vet exactly what he desired.

Some fans do not believe Luke is dead even though Victor Cassadine has implied that he had him killed. On Wednesday Victor called off a hit on Laura Collins (Genie Francis) not that Luke had been eliminated. There could be more going on than meets the eye and time will tell. For now, however, it seems that Luke went out in that blaze of glory that Anthony Geary desired.

General Hospital fans will be watching and waiting to hear from Geary or from a leak at ABC that details what was behind this latest move. Frank Valentini tweeted recently asking if Luke really were dead so consider that Geary could change his mind and return to the soap.
