Animation Style

Does animation make an anime?

When I am looking at an anime to watch I always think about the animation style. The animation style isn't a huge reason people pick an anime but it is a huge factor. If you are going to be watching a show for hours you would want it to be visually pleasing to you. I would like to say upfront I am not an animator, I have just seen a lot of anime.

There are a few common styles that I am going to be going over in this blog. I'd love to hear your favorite in the comments below.

Let's see if the animation makes the anime with these few different styles.

Simple Anime

Millionaire Detective: Balance Unlimited

This is the most popular style of animation. I would say 80% of anime have this simple style. It is more of a realistic look at the characters without dramatic features, sharp lines, and more natural styles. Here are a couple of examples to show you what I am talking about.

Spy X Family

Fullmetal Alchemist

Jujutsu Kaisen

Now that you see the similarities in this style you will start to notice it everywhere. I think this is a great style that can create a lot of uniqueness in characters while keeping things simple. If you are just getting started with anime or want to get your friends into anime I highly recommend picking an anime with this style. Check out - Recommending anime

Old School

Cowboy Bebop

Old-school animation is such a vibe. Every character is extremely unique, bodies have eccentric proportions, Hair that defies gravity, and fun color pallets. I have found people who grew up with this style of anime (Like myself) love this style because of the nostalgia. And if you didn't grow up with the style please give it a try because it is so fun and the stories are always amazing. Here are some old-school examples.

Trigun

Dragon Ball Series
Neon Code Geass

They didn't care about making anything look realistic. I love the colors and scenery that make you feel like you have been transferred into another world. Do you have an old-school anime you grew up with?

Kawaii

K-on

This isn't a very popular art style but one of my favorites. The kawaii art style has soft features and huge eyes. I am a sucker for this style just because of how cute it is. I wish this was a more popular style because check out how cute these anime are!!

Tamako Love Story

Lucky Star

Tanaka-Kun is always listless

This is such a simple and cute style. The eyes sink you into the characters, and the soft look gives a calming look to the anime.

Artsy

The Great Pretender

This is a completely different style from other artsy anime but has some common features. One of the biggest things in this category is you can tell the animators had fun creating it. They go all out with the characters, backgrounds, fights, and anything they can do to bring their imagination to the big screen. Here are some examples.

Bubble
Children of the Sea

Violet Evergarden

There are so many great artsy styles. I love to see animators let loose and let their creativity flow. Some anime is so breathtaking it almost doesn't feel real. Some are so creative and colorful that your eyes are locked on the screen. Whichever it is artsy anime will always be great to watch, even if the story isn't good the animation makes up for it.

The animation style has nothing to do with the story and doesn't make or break whether the anime will be good or not, But it does have an emotional connection to those watching. Maybe you didn't even realize you had an animation preference until reading this. When you look at your next anime to watch will you be looking at animation style?
