A Wholesome Spider-Man Series!

A Comic Book Recommendation

The ongoing series, written by Tom Taylor puts the Friendly Neighborhood in "Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man." Every issue from this series is very well written, further solidifying my opinion that Tom Taylor is an absolutely fantastic comic book writer. Tom Taylor and the illustrator, Juann Cabal, create very touching and visually pleasing stories. This series is bound to make you feel many emotions, you'll laugh, you'll feel sad, and everything in between.

Lots of Responsibility

The stories look at Spider-Man, not as just a super-hero that is always swinging around New York City and capturing bad guys, but a genuine person, who knows and cares about the people in his neighborhood. This comic focuses just as much on the neighborhood as it does on Spider-Man himself. You see Spider-Man helping people with ordinary everyday problems, speaking with a hot dog guy that he gets lunch from regularly. It humanizes Spider-Man in a way that readers rarely get to see.

Of course, Spider-Man is only one part of the character. The other part is his secret identity, Peter Parker. The issue deals with his regular everyday problems like annoying roommates. It also deals with family problems, and Peter’s ability to balance the multiple parts of his life in a manner that is designed to pull on the heart-strings.

Lights, Camera, Action!

Okay, I’m sure you get that a lot of ordinary people-things happen in this story, but what would a Spider-Man story be without some kind of threat that terrorizes New York? This series does not lack action that I can tell you for sure. Even in the single-issue stories, of which there are a couple. I think Taylor does a very good job of balancing these various aspects that make the character who he is. The first three stories take up six issues in total, which is how many have been released when this post was written. They are generally self-contained so you don’t really need to read the previous issue in most cases.

Story 1: Issues # 1-4

Peter Parker notices that his neighbor has been acting a little bit strange lately, and offers a helping hand only to realize that what his neighbor needs isn’t Peter Parker. She needs help from Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man. The story arc features a new-super powered face that we haven’t seen before (or at least I haven’t), and a familiar superhero that makes a guest appearance! Meanwhile, Aunt May has a secret she has been hiding from Peter and is waiting for the right time to tell him.

Story 2: Issue #5

The second story is only one issue long, and focuses on Peter dealing with the bad news Aunt May has told him, and how that bleeds into his life as Spider-Man. In this issue, Spider-Man is seen helping... a criminal?! Another superhero and fellow Avenger makes an appearance in this story.

Story 3: Issue #6

The third and last story so far is my favourite one! Spider-Man has a new sidekick named Spider-Bite! The two battle their way through many of Spider-Man’s greatest foes. The Spider-duo come face-to-face with the biggest threat they’ve seen yet! Do they stand a chance against the Sinister Six... ty? That’s right, the Sinister Sixty! This wholesome story is filled with tons of action.

As you can probably tell I am very fond of this series so far, so hopefully the quality doesn’t go down as we move forward in the series (it usually does, unfortunately). I strongly recommend that you read it, especially if you like emotionally driven stories. As for my future posts, please look out for my posts on DC’sYear of the Villain, and the all-New series: Batman and The Outsiders!
