Adventures of a Vegan Vamp certainly sounded like it was going to be pretty out there -- and not necessarily good. I found this book by Cate Lawley in a BookBub email. It was listed as free on Amazon and the title was so out there that I had to give it a shot. It’s free, it’s not gonna hurt anything to give it a shot, right? Especially with nearly 500 reviews on Amazon! Well, thankfully, I was pleasantly surprised by this book.

Listed as a cozy mystery, Adventures of a Vegan Vamp is a pretty short read. It has under 300 pages and should take less than five or six hours to read, making it a near-perfect cure for our boredom. This isn’t a book that you’re going to drown in or be weighed down trying to get through it. The writing is fantastic, light and amusing. There are some typos, but not many and they don’t take away from the story at all. It does poke fun at itself, which, in my opinion, makes the story that much better.

Follow Mallory through her journey from everyday life to being a baby vampire. The book cuts to the chase pretty quickly. There’s enough set up for you to understand Mallory and her daily life and struggles, but it doesn’t lead you on for 5 chapters setting it up. She makes it to vamp-hood very quickly. The author, Cate Lawley, is very good at setting up likable and understandable characters very quickly. She doesn’t need to waste a lot of time when she’s building characters and the world around them. Her characters are very human and believable. The world she created is definitely one I can see myself getting lost in.

Once Mallory goes through this change, her life, unsurprisingly, really turns upside down. Her body changes, her attitude changes, her entire personality changes. It’s almost like Mallory goes from being a nasty teenager in high school to a full-formed adult that realizes how stupid and judgmental she was. I love her growth through the first book, though I wish I had a better idea of her life before. Her past is a little vague, enough for you to get the point the idea of what she was like pre-vampire, but I would have liked just a little more detail. I’m hoping with the other books in the series, we will get to see her past more. Don’t get me wrong, she is set up well and is quite relatable, but I would like just a little bit more.

After finally discovering what is going on with her body, she finds that she was made “illegally” and vows to find the creature responsible for the end of her normal life. She finds she wasn’t the only one this creature has attacked, and the others weren’t nearly as lucky. Though, her own situation isn’t without many, many problems. She’s not what you would call a “typical vampire.” I’m pretty sure the “vegan” part of the title speaks for itself, but just in case, Mallory has an aversion to blood, not good for a vampire!

Follow Mallory through her exciting journey of vamp-hood! It is a fun and entertaining ride. If you’re a fan of cozy mysteries, paranormal stories, comedy, or even young adult fiction, you are likely to enjoy this book. And the best part is, it’s free! Adventures of a Vegan Vamp also leads perfectly into the next book. I really enjoyed where the story was leading and can’t wait to read the rest of the series!

If you enjoy the first one, there are several other books in this series, each priced at $4.99 currently for the ebooks. Some of them are free on Audible right now! One is even free with Kindle Unlimited. They’re certainly worth a look! You can purchase the whole series for less than $20.
