A Long Way Down - A Movie Review
This is a film for anyone who is struggling.

You can’t cut the long story short.
A Long Way Down is a 2014 film based on Nick Hornby’s novel. Four people meet at the top of a building on New Year’s Eve. Intended to commit suicide, they create a pact, instead. They continue to live while helping one another deal with difficult problems.
This movie was a bigger surprise than I expected. Based on the synopses, A Long Way Down has a dark appeal with a theme centered around suicide. This film is about friendship. Always look beyond difficult times to see the good.
Pierce Brosnan, Toni Collette, Imogen Poots, and Aaron Paul made an excellent acting team. They are the driving forces of A Long Way Down. This quartet conquers notable range, tracking their personalities, and illustrating genuine chemistry.
As everyone knows, I am an immense Toni Collette fan. She never disappoints. As for Pierce Brosnan, I never expected him in a role like this. It goes to show that he can do range. Martin keeps the group together.
Speaking of range, Imogen Poots is another favorite actor of mine. She has played a variety of roles. She’s funny as the irresponsible, but sensitive Jess. I have not seen Aaron Paul in any other films. His performance was moving. Never give up on hidden talents.
Each character is given a chance to narrate the story. I liked that addition. We get to see the story from multiple perspectives. It also allows us to get to know each character.
These strangers form a friendship and take care of each other. They’re all undergoing different situations, but each feels helpless. The characters hide from inner demons or situations they are unsure of how to deal with.
I loved the interactions, even how they’re paired off during scenes. Big friend groups have individual friendships which is important to address. It studied the different relationships between the friends, along with their conversations. Who feels comfortable with telling secrets?
I thought A Long Way Down would take place in one night. I’m glad this film is something different. There is more to the story as the characters agree to a pact. Instead of staying in the confines of the big city, we travel to other locations. Locations play an important role in how they affect characters. I was jealous when the characters traveled to a sunny island.
The film uses comedy to its advantage. It’s not an easy topic to derive comedy from, but the characters have a sense of humor. I laughed when it was revealed that Jess had been in the bathroom while another character was having a romantic evening.
Pascal Chaumeil made A Long Way Down for anyone who is struggling. He approaches the sensitive subject matter with respect and humor. The story avoids a dark nature. A Long Way Down is a loud film, but whenever there’s a quiet scene, it speaks full volumes.
One aspect the film could have gone without is how the character’s suicide pact story becomes public. It wasn’t necessary and it exploits them. It was better to focus on the quartet’s relationships.
A Long Way Down centers around an important topic that has garnered more attention since this film’s release. Mental health has been taken more seriously. Always find help if you are experiencing distraught feelings. We are never alone. The people who you meet are so important.
The conclusion is both tear-jerking and heartwarming. It is not a depressing film, but rather a light atmosphere. Give A Long Way Down a chance because you may find an answer.
