A Guide to Super Saiyan Green

With all the spectrum of colors that Dragon Ball characters can power up to, a guide to Super Saiyan Green will show you how this power level stacks up against the rest.

Super Saiyan Green is one of the more obscure transformations of the Dragon Ball universe. There's no official designation for Super Saiyan Green from Toei Animation, as there are for Super Saiyan Red or Blue, but there are two main states that "Super Saiyan Green" could be referring to. The first is the state of a full power Super Saiyanthat Legendary Super Saiyans can access, and the second is a transformation that Goku and Vegeta have yet to fully explore.

Seeing as this transformation is shrouded in mystery, I made this guide to Super Saiyan Green to help you figure out what it means when a Goku or Vegeta transform into a Super Saiyan Green form.

Legendary Super Saiyan

Regular Super Saiyan auras are bright yellow and fiery, sort of resembling a ball of electricity, but it's important to remember that some Saiyans, like Broly (one of the top Dragon Ball villains created so far), are not what most would consider "regular." Having access to such primal power gives his energy a bright green color, so in his Super Saiyan form, he is surrounded by a green haze, with green hair and eyes. Even his ki blasts are green.

First introduced in the movie Dragon Ball Z: Broly—The Legendary Super Saiyan, Broly turns out to be one of the strongest opponents Goku and his friends have ever faced. He is claimed to be the stuff of legends—a powerful Saiyan born with abnormally high battle power, as well as the ability to reach a degree of strength only seen once in a thousand years. Though his martial arts techniques aren't exactly the picture of refinement, Broly gets by on brute force and grit, blowing past Goku and Vegeta's ki blasts and shaking off their punches with ease. Their pecking at him serves to anger him more and more until he essentially detonates, his energy skyrockets, and his physical body morphs into a screaming mass of muscle—his legendary form—and only gets stronger as the fight goes on.

What Super Saiyan Green Can Do

Another iteration of the Legendary Super Saiyan form appears in the character of Kale, a Saiyan from Universe 6. She is a sweet and shy individual—vaguely similar to the Dragon Ball Super version of Broly—and has difficulty raising her voice, much less inflicting harm on another individual.

Everyone has their trigger though, and when Kale saw her best friend, Caulifla, so enamored by Goku that she diverted all her attention away from her and to him, she too detonated as a result. Her slim frame grew just as much as Broly's did, her soft-spoken voice was replaced with a guttural roar, and she seemed to burn bright green.

Moments before, Goku had been amused, at best, by Caulifla's performance as she showed off her transformation into a Super Saiyan, but he was nothing short of giddy watching Kale transform. That changed when Caulifla charged after him, screaming his name, and tearing up everything before her. His regular Super Saiyan form had no effect on her at all, and even when he turned Blue, Kale walked through his Kamehameha wave, grabbing him by the face and eager for a fight. Before she was able to kill him though, her Saiyan powers spiraled out of her control and she spewed energy blasts across the entire tournament floor.

Both Kale and Broly, when transforming, grow to several times larger than their base forms—and scream as if they are in pain the whole time. As they lose more control over themselves and their emotions, they become not unlike wounded animals, attacking whatever is in front of them with reckless abandon.

The main difference between Kale and Broly is that Kale learned to bring herself back under control. After much rampaging, and terrorizing the entire stadium, she seemed to realize how much danger she was putting people in, Caulifla included. By the end of the Tournament of Power, she was able to control when she transformed and how she directed her energy.

A Future Transformation

In the movie Dragon Ball Super: Broly, something new happened during Vegeta's transformation. His hair turns green for a quick moment—a moment which was never addressed in the movie, but which everyone in the audience noticed.

It's been hinted at before that Vegeta may be a descendant of Yamoshi, the man known as the original Super Saiyan God. In Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods movie, he muttered to himself that only he should be able to access the power of the god form, and Yamoshi's silhouette that flashed on screen during the transformation ritual looked an awful lot like him, so it's not too absurd to believe he may be able to reach the level of the Legendary Super Saiyan (and turn green as a result).

Later on in the big fight in Dragon Ball Super: Broly, as it became clear his current levels weren't working, Goku powered up to Super Saiyan Blue; and, much like Vegeta had, it was revealed that Goku unleashed a new kind of ki.

Nothing is confirmed so far, but it would be interesting to see how Goku and Vegeta would be able to utilize that primal sort of energy. Seeing as they'd already mastered the concentration necessary to become Super Saiyan Gods, they should be able to learn to adjust to Legendary Super Saiyan. It's likely they'd have to explore its advantages and disadvantages compared to Super Saiyans Blue and Red, and there could be a lot of flashy, colorful fight scenes with the Saiyans deciding which of the transformations available to them would be the most useful. The animations should definitely be interesting as well, if not just for their cinematic value. Besides their Great Ape forms way back in Dragon Ball Z's early days, Goku and Vegeta haven't gone through such a drastic physical change with any other Super Saiyan transformation as Broly and Kale did when they went absolutely berserk.

Unyielding Power

Regardless of how it is used, I'm always interested in seeing our heroes grow stronger.

The lore behind the energy that fuels the Saiyans' transformations can be murky and confusing at times, but hopefully a guide to Super Saiyan Green was able to root through the Saiyans' mythos, exposing a raw, primitive, unrestrained power that has passed on from legends into the modern Saiyans that we love today. Will our heroes be able to stay ahead of the curb to remain one of the strongest Dragon Ball characters?
