A Filmmaker's Review of the 100 Greatest Biopics of All Time
A List
Biopics are a real treat for an audience, especially when the person in question is either really inaccessible or, even worse, dead. It's even better when there's a really great story to tell and a really good amount of research to go off. For example: in the film Capote (2005), there was a book which compiled the thoughts of friends, family, publishers, press and everyone who knew Truman Capote in order to help with the making of the film. This meant that the film was far more accurate because it went off the opinions and views of people who actually knew him.
What we are going to do today is count down the 100 greatest biopics ever made. And for those of you who don't know, a biopic very literally means 'biographical picture' - so it is a film about someone's life or life events. It normally spans either the entire life or, concentrates on a small section or build up to something. If you'd like to learn more about biopics, then please proceed to click here to my article A Filmmaker's Guide to Biopics.
What this won't include is documentary films such as The Two Killings of Sam Cooke or The Rolling Thunder Revue: A Bob Dylan Story - those aren't people playing the characters of other people, that's a documentary about the person themselves. This is purely people portraying other people in a biographical picture.
My personal favourites will be marked with a (*) and if you don't see your favourite, please don't hate me.
